Shasta Daisies

Burlington, NC

I had some beautiful shasta daisies this year. I have noticed thousands of little seedlings all around where the daisies bloomed. Are they new plants? Will all these come up and bloom next year?
Good Lord...that is aloy of daisies...

They are new plants, whether or not they're daisies or something else you'll have to wait and see. I grew Shasta daisies when I lived in Ohio and I don't remember them being prolific reseeders, so I wonder if it isn't something else, but there's really nothing to do but wait and see! Once the seedlings get a bit bigger, you could post a picture of them on the ID forum and see if anyone recognizes them, that way if they're some nasty weed you can pull them out before they become a problem.

The shasta daisies also come up from under the gound (not sure if it suckers or how but that is what happened in my garden ...you could also divide the plants up in Autumn.

Much Thanks...I'll keep an eye on them and if I can't tell what they are I'll post a picture..

when i cut the dead flowers off my shasta daisies i push them under the ground in hopes that that is a seed and will grow--i know the dead marigolds are full of seeds but was wondering if i am right about the daisies?

It is worth a try but they seem to come up bigger each year spreading from underground.....and in the fall if you gently dig them up ...you can separate the plant into a few plants ....you will be able see what to do.

They may or may not be daisy seedlings, and they may or may not be true to the parent (depends on whether or not it was a hybrid variety you planted).

But Shasta daisies are fairly easily propagated by dividing root segments.

thanks--my shastas are almost dead--maybe too much rain?

My Shasta Daisies re-seed themselves all over the place, AND, they form clumps that get bigger each year unless divided.

Don't feel so bad planolinda, you are not alone. I have never had any luck with shastas, I don't know why, the other daisies seem to like me. I gave up on shatas, stopped planting them, they just would not come back from winter for me, or they would, just to bloom a couple terrible blooms, then die. Can't figure it out. But guess what I bought and planted?? You guessed it!! And it looks awful!! I don't seem to have too much trouble with anything else. WHY oh WHY?

well misery loves company and so i feel better knowing i am not the only shasta failure! everything i see about them is how easy they are to grow!
