Part Sun/Part Shade

Tuscaloosa, AL(Zone 7b)

What is the difference between part sun and part shade? I see these two descriptions but haven't a clue how to use them. For part sun does that mean the plant will take afternoon sun or morning sun? Same question for part shade.

Thanks,

I think they probably mean about the same thing. In a hot climate, anything that says either one of those things is going to be happier if it gets AM sun and PM shade, sun during the hottest part of the day is something you typically only want to expose full sun plants to. And even some plants that are labelled full sun will be happier with a bit of PM shade in hot climates.

So they are the same. Okay, good, that's cleared up.

It gets really hot here in the summer. We are heat zone 8. If a plant will take full sun/part shade, I would be better off to plant it where it gets morning sun and afternoon shade? In this climate for morning shade/afternoon sun, it would be better to plant something for full sun?

Yes, things that are full sun to part shade should get PM shade, and anywhere that has afternoon sun you'll be better off with full sun plants. Although depending on how many actual hours of sun it gets, you may not get the amount of blooms that you would if you planted it somewhere that got more hours of sunlight, but something that likes to grow in part shade is going to fry in late afternoon sun.

Thank you so very much. I really appreciate the info. I have a gardenia and several other plants that I see now I need to move.

Actually I do not have a reply but am looking for answers. In front of the house facing north there is a patch of shade
that is from the house. This section gets afternoon sun aproximately starting at 5:30. I have been looking for evergreens that will do well in this type of area. There are no other plants in the yard now except grass that seems
to stay very green. Azusa tends to get fairly hot in the spring and summer

please help with plant selection

Thanks so much lifesprings
