What's blooming today # 3

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Victor.

Seandor: I just read your post again and I'm not so sure there'd be a lot of daylilies that would be open by Father's Day, especially if it was a cold spring.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

okay - skip the daylilies for father's day - keep the daylily cutflower idea.

ummm . . . well, something has to be blooming father's day . . . I gotta figure this out, because i will probably have to grow a lot of this stuff from seeds.

I will go to Bluestone perennials webpage. They have a dropdown menu where you can search plants by bloomtime.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Roses!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

.......and Japanese irises! Annuals, too.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Pirl, I have a question for you concerning daylillies. I have a large clump of them, but they seem a little 'slow" this year. I've had them for 5 to 8 years. Should they be divided every so often to keep them vigorous? And a night picture without stepping in anything but grass......Rhaposdy trying to hide

And my volunteer Mimosa that chose the perfect spot to grow. Considered a weed tree round these parts but I love her anyway....as do the hummers

venu, Daylilies do need to be divided regularly. Their bloom will keep decreasing if not. Didn't mean to step on Pirl's toes!!

Fort Edward, NY(Zone 5a)

ooooh Dave-that "Stokesia" is beautiful. Could you tell me how tall it gets and what kind of sun it needs? Is it easy to grow? I have never seen anything like it-but I was looking for something like that to plant with some globe master alllium-Do you think this would be a good choice? It is really breathtaking!

Thanks,
~Dawn

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Victor. I think if Pirl is offended she will stomp your toes as she sees fit.
Question 2... should I wait for fall since they're coming into their bloom time now?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Venu - some people do it on a regular basis but I don't. Only one clump ended in disaster and died out from overexpansion. As long as you think it's losing vigor try dividing it (I go through the earth and plant with a sharp thrift shop knife - lots easier than digging it up) and see how it performs for you next year. You could even cut it in quarters and either move the other three, trade or give away the extras.

Rhapsody is lovely.

Fort Edward, NY(Zone 5a)

oh and Pixie-that is one gorgeous DL!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I am stomping on Victor's head. There are many I've never divided in 12 years that are just fine and not dwindling in number.

Yes, Venu, August or September would be better than now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I have seen my older clumps get less productive so I do divide them. They're so easy to divide. I often do as Pirl described - just whack through it and take a fraction away and plant it, leaving the rest.

Dawn, the Stokesia was mine but you can consult Dave if you like! It does not get very tall - under two feet. Very easy to grow. Full sun to part shade. Very undemanding. I like it a lot and recently divided and now have a good mass in the making.

Fort Edward, NY(Zone 5a)

Doh! So sorry Victor...My bad! It really is beautiful. I think I am going to have to be on the lookout for that-it seems like it would work perfectly. It would be in full sun, but with the giant alliums, they may ended up shaded a bit, so its great that they could take either...Thanks for the info and for the terrific pictures.

~Dawn

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're welcome Dawn. I have a different variety called 'Peachie's Pick' which will be blooming soon. I'll post photos of that too. It's very nice as well.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

as usual great pics everyone...I just love logging on and see what new surprises everyone has in store. I'm still waiting on some of my daylilies - they are just about ready to pop. Here's one that I cannot remember where I got it or what it's name was, but I love it just the same. The bloom is not more than 4 inches across.

Dave - did Victor send you a packet of those easy to grow native plants to seed around your lily then? Not too bad cyberdave. Finally a flower named after me - real blue - is that color fairly true?

Corrections - yes it is Pounce and I am the one without roses - I have plenty of thorns on my own.

Nice clematis venu.

Victor - I like the stokesia too, not real long lasting here.

Fort Edward, NY(Zone 5a)

Thanks Victor-Looking forward to seeing that one as well!

Nice Anita.

You know I need to compare this photo/flower to the other one I called Art's Pride because that actually might be Mango Meadowbright - this is the other one I have which seems darker.

Al i grew some mexican hat this year for the first time.... I plan on doing a few pots with just them next year.. love em

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Mine overwintered here. I split them up and gave some away.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Al I love that Dahlia!! Reminds me of one of those Shasta Daisies that have that bad hair day look. I have one but can't remember the name. Can't say I love the Mexican Hats. Looks like someone stomped on them and only part of the brim is left.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow... thanks al i thought they were annuals... learn something new everyday

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

pirl, the view from your back door is wonderful! I envy you the variety of water birds. I so enjoy the few we have.

al, I love the Autumn Colors and the Yvonne dahlia. None of mine are blooming yet. hope I'm not doing anything wrong. they all look ok. I gave them time-release fert when I planted and they are in full sun.

dave...WOW! so many pics! you do have flowers LOL beautiful! the pineapple lily is intriguing.

victor, the stokesia is beautiful..wonderful color! I got Janice Brown last year as a freebie with an order from Oakes. probably won't bloom til next year. I asked for it because my first name is Janice. I have 4 new dayliles that have scapes so I should have something to show later...I'm excited.

kim, your Janice Brown looks more like it. very pretty! I love pink :0)

pixie, you didn't say what the purple dl is...you know how I love 'em LOL. Purple Pawprint has 3 scapes (yay!) I call it Pixie Purple Pawprint. can't wait for it to bloom. Love your coreopsis, too. I need to get some yellow. it's so much more prolific than the pink I have.

venu, I like your Rhapsody. is it a true blue? I need one to climb with a yellow rose.

anita, whatever the name, the color on your dl is to die for...love it!

this thread is keeping me going while I wait for something to bloom here...I'm having a lull for a couple of days

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the compliments......the DL is called "Beaming Blessings". I just got it in May and it has been spitting out blooms ever since! It's a short little thing but what a bud builder!!!

Blooming here-- jack in the pulpits from China

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Wow Mainiac...thats neat. They look just like the ones that grow here in South China. LOL Are you finally getting blooms on your DL's and lilies? I have a few here and there but the amount of scapes say it won't be long!

Here's "Destined to See"....it was at HD for $6.99 and I could not walk on by!!

Great, Pixie. I wouldn't pass by an offer like that either. I may be blonde but I'm not dumb!

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

Here's what's blooming in the Hudson Valley (although on a ridge) as of Sunday ... Astilbes, Spirea and Dicentra Exima (love this little unassuming plant -- been blooming since early spring) ...

Great shot, Crockny!!

I haven't had my camera out for days. I think I'm getting 'shutter-fatigue'.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

OK. Victor stole my stokesia, Pirl's DL qustion and, appearently Al's roses because now Victor has them and Al doesn't. Is there no stopping this guy?

Daylily dividing requires muscles but is pretty error proof. I like the 2 shovel method (stick them into the plant back-to back and seperate) I inherited a large yellow DL that gets enormous. I pulled up clumps with about 30" circumference and made 8 plants (or more) out of each one. My more modern DLs aren't nearly so prolific.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's proof, Dave, that you're a lot younger, and or stronger, than I am!

I agree about the newer ones not forming the huge clumps I love so much.

When Victor steals Michael Douglas's wife we won't have him on our forum anymore!

Fort Edward, NY(Zone 5a)

Crockny-Lovely pictures! I especially love that rose that you grew from the cutting-it is quite beautiful.
