can I make pickles with burpless cukes?

Charlotte, NC

I am a first time vegetable gardener and I have recently planted a straw bale garden. I planted a small bush variety of a burpless cucumber. I now have tons of little cukes starting to grow. I didn't realize they were such high yield. Can I make pickles from this type of cuke? I certainly hope so, or all of my neighbors will find cucumbers on their porches every morning.
Thanks for any help!

I have been told that the difference between "pickling" cucumbers and "slicing" cucumbers is that the slicing kind don't make crisp pickles, that they are more likely to be soft pickles. The burpless kind would be considered a slicing cucumber.

However, my grandma didn't grow separate varities for eating fresh and for pickling, and her pickles were very good. I would say "give it a shot" and see how you like them. You've got nothing to lose as making pickles is cheap if you already have the cucumbers, and it's easy. There are hundreds of free recipes for that online. Just Google for pickle recipes, dill or sweet.

Good luck,

Hi Tina,

You are very welcome. And Welcome to Dave's Garden as well. Just about any question you have, there is someone who can answer it for you. I'm a newbie, too.
