The holes are showing up on these nicotianas and also my new clematis. It looks life leafcutters, but I want to be sure. Thanks.

They like my dry climate just fine! The snails do at least, don't see too many slugs here. I agree they're not going to climb buildings...but they or their eggs could have hitched a ride on something without you realizing it.
That's true. I do buy a lot of plants online, and they come from places that have slugs...hmmmm.
the holes look like stink bug damage to me .
