string of nickels

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello,
I live in Texas and I was wondering if any of you knows how can I get a plant called string of nickels. I tried the Internet, but the vendor that has it is out of stock. If someone knows how can I order it I would really appreciate it.
Thank you

Is this it?

It seems to be an Exotic Angel's plant if that is what you are looking for.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Yes, that is it. I called Exotic Angel's plants but they don't sell retail. And another vendor in the internet has it but it is out of stock and does not know when will he get it.
Any ideas?
Thank you for taking the time to look for it

Gosh, Lourdes, with it being an Exotic Angel, it will be more miss than hit at the big box stores. Maybe ask on the Houseplant forum. Someone there may have it and send you some cuttings. Good luck in your search. If I ever see it anywhere or know of a vendor, I will let you know.

Another tip would be to find out it's correct botanical name and do a search that way.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

thanks for your offer. I'll keep looking and will post on the forum as well. As for the botanical name some people say it is a hoya, others that it is a dicschidia so go figure.
I may call angel plants and ask for the name.
Thank you again.

It would be good to clarify with EA as to what is they are selling....if they know.

Good idea.. .thanks

Dischidia and Hoya are either synonyms, or they used to be the same genus and then they were split, or they used to be split and now they're the same genus, something like that. So if you're seeing it under either of those names it's the same plant. If you look it up in Plant Files you may find some vendors listed there who sell it, or else try googling for it. Kartuz sells a lot of Hoyas so you might check there, I think Logees has some too.

Here's a little more for you to go on. This vendor has this listed -

DISCHIDIA (HOYA RELATIVES)

Plant Listings:
Click on [c-d]

Scroll way down until you see it. I don't know how much help it will be as he has about 19 varieties of dischidia listed.

The whole key to your problem is getting the botanical name for the plant you are looking for.

Thank you both so very much!!! I'll let you know if I get it.

Someone on another forum had this EA plant (which is labeled as a Senecio but confessed by EA that the 'tag-maker' messed up and they used the tags anyway) and she sent cuttings to a botanist that is studying Dischidia plants, as she knew that it *was*, indeed, a Dischidia.

The botanist confirmed that this plant is a form of Dischidia nummularia, even though it may not *look* like the D. nummularia we're all familiar with. She stated that D. nummularia's growth is quite variable.

I think it was discussed on the hoya forum here at DG.

I'm impressed, Nan. I think you got it!

lol! Snowrose, I just remember that one because I had the plant myself at the time (don't have it any more, sorry) and it stumped me from day one that it was called Senecio....so whenever it was discussed, I followed it!

I found the post, it was from GreenGirl58 (Denise) and she's the one who went to all the trouble to have it ID'd properly.

Great and very informative link, Nan. Lourdes should be happy.

Hi everyone,
Sorry I did check the post this morning but had to take my son to the doctor.
Great news I really appreciate all your help. I’ll let you know as soon as I get it.
Thank you all again so very much.
Lourdes =)

Hope your son is healthy!
Forgot to mention that when I bought this plant, it was at a Home Depot about 70 miles from me....so, as Snowrose mentioned, definitely check your Home Depots and Lowe's stores!

Thank you, my son is getting better at least the fever went down -- lol he is 24, but I just have him until he goes back to school (he is in Vet school at Texas A&M).
I have been checking at both stores, I think by now they have nightmares with me.
I just hung up with a gentleman from EA, and he says that chances are that the plants won’t be shipped out until latter in the fall, he told me to call him again in August. So if by then I have not found one I will.
The problem with some of the internet sites is that they are expensive and very small, I found one that including shipping cost was close to $50.00 for a 2 inch pot, I could make the sacrifice (although I shouldn’t) and pay 40 or 45 for a bigger pot but for such a small pot.-- I’m not sure
But definitely I will keep checking.
I really appreciate your kindness and help.

Sorry I don't still have my plant.....I think I waited just a bit too long to water it at one time, and it pretty much dried up and croaked!
This one was very particular about watering....I quit watering mine from the top at the soil, as I had vine dieback every time I did.
I began watering it from the bottom and it was finally happy....well, until I *forgot* that last time!
At HD they were something like $8.99 give or take a few $$, so I would *not* spend 50 dollars on it if I were you, as they are a rather particular plant....a little risk is OK, but not 50 dollars worth, IMHO!

There are several people out there that own this plant, so as mentioned above, too, you might have some success on the Houseplant or Hoya forum.

Sorry to hear your son's been ill. Hope that fever stays away for good!

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

I agree with you Nan I’m not spending 50 for such a big risk, especially because I’m just beginning to learn about plants but still very ignorant.
I have another question if you don’t mind, how can I post in the Hoya forum, I thought this was the houseplants forum.
I’m new in the forums and I don’t have a membership.
Thank you Nan, I really appreciate your help.

There is another houseplant forum and a special one for Hoyas but you have to be a subscriber to use those. This one is also about houseplants but is open to everyone.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh I see, I'll suscribe maybe next week, so I can check the on the hoyas forum.
Thank you Ecrane3

There are a whole ton of other forums too once you subscribe, definitely worth joining (at least I think so!)
