dead or dormant

Hillsboro, MO

this past April all 4 of my viburnum summer snowflakes started to get their spring leaves. then we had the worst cold spell in st louis history as the temperature went down to 18 degrees for 4 straight days. about six weeks later 3 of the 4 have returned to having leaves.

the fourth one has no leaves. Is this one dead or dormant for the year?

thank you

Go and scratch just a little bit of tissue off- your fingernail will do..just a bit of the skin and you will see if it is still green underneath or not...green is still living.

Hi Zeco, do as chrissy sugested, but either way, if you dont find life at the top of your shrub, you could prune it slightly and see if it has any new buds still to come, especially IF, the other 3 have only just started to sprout new greenery, patience is a vitue in a garden, it is too early for these plants to go into dormancy till next year, this is the time when they put on some new growth for the following year, your have been shocked into slow growth by the severe frost you had, a wee while linger is required as they just might give you a flush of green, so good luck, WeeNel.
