This was our July 4th rain...................and now we are getting it again..............the news just said that 10" would probably be what we get..................
I am posting just a couple of pictures from July 4th...........creek rising behind my house......i am standing on my back porch
too much rain
I am sitting on a bridge ...............so glad the state helped us to put in this dam to prevent what i just showed you..............a lot of water that July 4th week..............
***I am wondering how much rain it will take to get this way again..................in early July it was a total of 12 inches in a couple of days.............
OMG!
glub, glub glub glub bbbbbbbbllllllllllubbbbbbb.........(finds something to stand on)
ok.....
enough already!
I was actually afraid that the bridge might go out with me and my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My big patch of Purple Prickly Pear just fell over today....too much rain and a mushy base... :( Alot more expected with a tropical wave out in the Gulf...... :o
Melanie
Mine have fallen over also!!!!!!!!!!!!! bummer............we take what we get and try to be grateful, but the envelope is being pushed isn't it..................
this is the wettest I ever remember in the summer time in Texas.............all over...........not just in one place.............good pic
yep have to agree.. it was wet about 3 years ago... we got 32" in 4 days but it wasn't wet all over texas... just around here.
32" would put us completely under the creek and all waters here on the gulf............12" and more almost does that to us..........my brother was trying to get as much grain as he could today knowing that there wouldn't be any more 'getting in' any more grain after this rain today............he saw 3 tornados as he was preparing to leave...........one of them hit the ground and was confirmed on the news at 6 tonight..........right where he was in the field...........just really crazy weather.........
only 30 minutes away in Mathis the news broke through and said the hail had ruined the cotton still in the ground................
yeah those are the folks really being hurt by all this.
I have to second gessiegail. We flood too easily around here, too.
I purchased a Mandevilla because we just sodded our backyard and planned out some beds. The rain's been what the doc recommended for the sod but NOT for my $50 Mandevilla. I've lost 1/2 the leaves, although it's growing very well on the top side. Ugh ... I can say though that all of my sago palms are putting out their second set of fronds for this year, which is pretty unusual. Also, I have a mushroom problem and a mold problem now in some of my beds - I don't do any extra watering - just let nature do the dumping and WOW!! I've got moldy cedar mulch in areas. Geez - it's definitely the best time to plant hibiscus and things like that. I guess there's a positive. That and sod - a good time for some sodding!
The sad part for my brother and others...........they had such a short period to get all the grain in..........everyone couldn't share their usual equipment...........my brother's land was still wet and couldn't get in the fields with his regular heavy combines so he went out yesterday morning and bought a combine that could also be used in rice fields......just to use yesterday and today..............and then sell it when the rain came again.............someone put water in the diesel accidentally yesterday so he didn't have it all day..........all he got in today was from early this morning until about 2 o'clock.............i feel so badly about it!!!!!!!! not just for him............one cousin still had over 1000 acres of grain he had to leave in the field to rot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there weren't be any more going back in............the grain had already started to sprout after the last rains...........
we were cross posting..................I have lost sooooooooooo many plants..............all my 125 gladiola bulbs got so much rain, they turned yellow even as they had blooms on them.............i left them in the ground to rot, also............
Well, the rains are causing problems everywhere.
My daughter's sister-in-law in Chicago had her backyard
pool bust from all the rains, and it washed out all the new
sod plus a lot of her back fence from the force of the water.
I hate to see what hurricane season is gonna look like
this year.
the family farm in Lytle has 8 foot tall coastal hay in the field that no equiptment can harvest. Anything we drive into the field sinks to the axles immidiately. I am unsure how many months of dry weather we will have to have in order to get it dry enough to harvest either. The good news is the two stock ponds are full after drying out last year. The bad news is they overflowed creating a mote around Mom and Dad's house and drowned almost all Mom's cats.

When we have a mild winter we hear alot about how the bugs will be worse in spring and summer, right? Well when we have a weird summer like this, what effect does it have on the following winter and even next year?
My heart really goes out to the farmers and ranchers. They almost always get the raw end of the deal anyway. I heard this is the wettest year since 73, but I was in Texas in 73 and don't remember anything like this. It's been wet since Feb!
I agree with the "wettest ever".
Checked the river crest history for the Brazos - said '94 was higher than this one. Not sure if I believe it - the creek behind the house seems higher this year, and it is the level of the Brazos - it backs up into Oyster Creek. Have not seen any 'gators, yet, but expect them any time. We did have them in '94.
My cats have fleas like you wouldn't believe. I've always used the Lifeline on them but even that isn't working. I gave them something from the vet that killed everything for 24 hours then treated them with Lifeline again. I even treated the house. No good by the end of the week we were being eaten up by them again. The exterminater said it's the same all over.
Our cattle are in the western and higher end of the ranch because we have a seasonal creek that runs through a large portion of the northeastern part of the ranch. With the soil so saturated that creek can rise and flow so fast that I was afraid the calves would try to swim across if they were separated from their mothers and drown. Grass in low patches in the pastures is dead and now water weeds are growing in its place. Working cattle in the rain is the pits. I worry about them when there's lightening around because we have lost cattle to lightening before. We get stranded behind a low water crossing. The list of rain related problems grows, but we have been so blessed in that we have not had the horrible floods that have plagued so many fellow Texans. We have had enough sunny days that my neighbors have been able to harvest hay (We buy our hay from one of them.). The devastating drought of 2005 and 2006 are still too fresh in my mind to utter the words that started this thread. I hope everyone stays safe. That is my main concern.
we got 31/2" yesterday...........emptied the rain gauge............and just emptied 3" more and the worst is still sitting out in the Gulf of Mexico...............
Betty, from the very beginning I realized that this is a two-edged sword. Some good, some bad depending one your own perspective. I have nothing to loose except a few plants that can be replaced. The long-term benefits outway the bad in some instances.
That said...I have no reason to fear flood as it would have to be as Noah's flood because we are high. I worry and fret over those that loose homes, livestock, income and lives.
Ironic, first posted this on June 26, it is now July 26 and the State of Texas is still experiencing the phenomenon of rain.
It has been raining here today....1/4". Was in downtown Dallas at 5:30 and the tall buildings were totally obscured with the volacity of the wind and rain.
Outside thermometor reads 76 degrees with 70% humidity.......on J u l y 26th, 2007.
I have nothing to lose by this continued rain...........31/2" yesterday and today we poured out another 2/12",,,,,,,,,,,,,with the rest of the rain sitting out in the Gulf of mexico waiting to come on in,............,
but i do have empathy for people whose lives are so impacted by this excessive rain.................it is not a two edged sword for me............drought is harmful in many ways and flooding is harmful in many ways...............
LouC,
You are right about the perspective. For the most part, we are on high ground, too. The creek and the woods beyond it only become a problem when the ground is saturated and we get several inches of rain at once. We looked into potential flood problems before we bought the ranch. We are also on the high side of the Colorado River. The polar ice caps would have to melt for us to go under. Most of the soil is very sandy so my plants have survived. I'm more afraid of DH and his mower and shredder and the damage he can do with them.
The rain is beginning to affect us, though. I just got back from checking on several newborn calves and one has the scours and appears to have lost weight. We are going to have to slog through the muck and mire in the corral tomorrow to get the mother and calf to the vet or the baby is toast. But I figure we can deal with these things. There was nothing we could do against the drought. We had to be so careful driving around the ranch and hoping that the spark arrestor on the Gator did its job.
Gessiegail, it's a good thing I still have the cactus pads you sent me in the greenhouse. They have rooted and sent out new pads.
good,Betty!!!!!!!!!!!! i was given two pads of this awesome cactus from Vietnam with a giant white flower and a fruit to eat...........which is expensive in fancy grocery stores..............each pad has put on a new leaf almost as big as the mother leaves............the Vietnamese couple who gave them to me told me that i had to build a high mound around the telephone post or some kind of post to tie up the cactus as it weighs so much.................I have seen theirs in bloom and it is almost one of those not believable blooms...........
just waiting for some dry weather to get them planted..............when they take off, remind me to send you a pad............a real treat...............
I feel bad for the farmers and ranchers. After 2 years (more in some places), now their livelihood is threatened by the rain that everybody longed for before. I hope we get a break and some drying-out time. My bumper crop of figs is now a bust...damaged by too much rain and not really edible...not to mention the wild animals raided it once, damaging the plant.
My favorite food we did not get either this year. The excessive rain caused the figs to be eaten by bugs or some other creature............a general mess to say the least.......(I am overweight so this is no tragedy.....lol)
I'm seeing all sorts of bugs that I haven't seen before....and BIG! lol....I'm loving the toads and lizard babys springing up everywhere tho... :) I've been seeing alot of pregnant female lizards....which to me is always a good sign in a newer garden. :) And like gessiegail...I just keep emptying the rain gauge!
Melanie
I found a bunch of little 1" light green frogs............almost picked them up for the terrariums my grandchildren are making this weekend............decided it was too cruel to the frogs..................don't ya think?????????????
and you didn't take pictures of them? shame! *g
on DG for just a short time..............not everyone is awake yet...............the grandchildren found and put in empty terrariums about 5 little green grasshoppers and lots of little frogs........................
**I didn't have to make a decision about them keeping them............their dad said they had to get out and go back to their own homes before the kids went to bed last night......................
raining here yet again STILL?
no, the rain has stoppped.............we had sun yesterday and today.............only sprinkles several times yesterday...............yay!!!!!!!!!!
