Another 1/4 inch since midnight and..................it's raining.
Have been considering redoing my largest perennial/annual bed. No decision now....everything is dead or dying. So sorry for those that are growing hay or crops. That is their livelihood. My son is in Tulsa and he is riding the 4 wheeler over a gulley to feed horses and livestock. Scares me.
I am blessed that DH retired last October and we don't either one have to be anywhere in this weather. I need a new book. Have read all that I have and the magazines too. I noticed DH reading the classified for lack of anything else. Cardinal is still singing his head off.
too much rain
I hear you - I am right by a huge hay field - totally a loss at this point from the looks of it right now.
I pulled all my garlic early because it was beginning to rot from within. I harvested the cloves and pickled most of it. Besides the rotting garlic and excessive amounts of snails - the vegetable garden is holding up okay. New Braunfels didn't get even close to the amount of rain as the surrounding areas. Thank goodness.
Something's really wrong here, and I'm getting a
bit nervous. The patio is dry, the carport is dry, and
there's a funny light all over the yard. But don't worry -
I see the grey clouds starting to roll in again, so it
looks like everything will soon be "normal." Yuk.
*giggle
Mahnot,
Just Ma Nature playing tricks on us all.
Checked the grass as I picked up the paper on the 4th - dry - all the water was in the air. It was about 6AM, so could not mow until 8, so went to the store to pick up a few items. Got back and read the paper until 7:40. Got the mower out, gassed up - then BOOMMM - rain back with a vengence.
Now waiting for the HOA letter - again.
THE SUN IS OUT AND HAS BEEN FOR 3-4 HOURS. COULD IT BE........
AND YES, I AM SHOUTING. NOT AT YOU. BUT BECAUSE.....
When I went to lunch today I didn't recognize at first what was happening. There was something bright and it was warm (and dry) on my skin!!! Oh, yes...It was sunshine, I remembered! We have had an afternoon and evening without precipitation! WOW. I hope it is enough to drain some of this excess off. When I left home this AM it was still raining and the shade beds were standing in water...
Raining here. Woken up throughout the night with rumbling of thunder. Rain barrel full this AM. Thank goodness it's not a downpour but more constant sprinkling. No garden or mowing again this weekend. I'm having withdrawls.
The sun is shining, the birds are chirping, and there
are herds of gnats and butterflies all over the rotting
peaches. The grass is almost to my knees, but who's
complaining ? I'm glad the rain has started to move
off to the East coast - they really need it. Yippeeeee !!!
Well I am seeing sunshine aout my windows and I am going out to get in it! LOL But the birds are not chirping here...I think they are in shock!
Oh I am so glad y'all are finally getting some sunshine. I've been so worried
carol
woo hoo lawn mower man just delivered my fixed lawn mower, I can mow now...now if I can just remember where I put those pontoons. hmmmm.
I know you guys in the Southeast will love to have our leftover rain. Hope you get loads of it to fill your lakes.
Well it was sunny all day! I mowed DH got stuck once and I got stuck once! but other than that we got it done! and I am sunburned! LOL My face is pink and my arms are browner... I deadheaded and disbuded and pulled a few weeds and visited all my flower beds. The brugs started drooping when the sun came out but I think it was shock also... They got better toward evening. And I had so many butterflies! They must have been just waiting fot the sun to come out. It was a lovely day! I hope it stays this way for a while!
I was gone for a week and since the forecast said "Rain all week" I turned off my sprinkler system and sure 'nuf, it did rain and all my plants are wonderful ...
except for the purple cascading petunias. They must like it dry as they are ALL DEAD except for 2 along a 35 foot stretch....aw...I paid good money for those little things!!!!
most of my stuff is tropical so i'm 90% good. The roses seem to love all this too. I prefer this to no rain that is for sure.
Stayed dry long enough yesterday for me to mow everything - 10 minutes after I got inside (I'm serious) it started raining! Luckily only showers nothing major. Over-cast today - looks like rain (again).
Does anyone know what is causing this? Is it global warming? A freak of nature? It would be really nice to have all of this rain if it could be broken up by a few days of sunshine now and then. To give the plants a chance to get some much needed sunshine.
Heard a climatologist speech several years ago. His take on this:
"We have experienced a period of very stable conditions for the last 70 to 200 years. But the Earth's historical record shows violent swings in temperature, precipitation, etc. We are entering a period that is returning to "normal" for the planet."
Obviously, mankind has helped accelerate the return, but is not the only source of the problem. Plate techtonics, volcanos, forest fires, etc. all play a part.
Bubba, did you take Oceanography, too? hehehe
I took it in lew of science which I'm not that good at! Thought it was going to be all about fish, coral, water, etc. Nott!!!
Tectonic plates shifting, volcanos going off, El Nino, La Nina, etc.
I did do my term paper on Manatees. Now that was KEWL. More than you would think about an ole seacow!
Sorry, I was a Journalism/Political Science double major - wanted to be a White House photo-journalist. But, read everything on anything (except fiction).
My great-aunt (who got her CPI certificate in 1926) asked me what I was going to be when I grew up. I was in high-school at the time. My reply:
"I don't know, I haven't tried everything, yet!"
Truer today - 45-50 years later. Still learning, still doing NEW things.
THANK YOU - Dave's Garden members for all your insight and fellowship.
Amen and amen. I have had my thirst for knowledge reawakened by the information that is given so freely on DG. Thanks to all of you.
They've predicted rain for us for the last 2 days,
but it's been dry so far. Lost the big old salvia
that has been here for many years, lots of my plants
just turned black and gave up.
That's a lot of water, Rena. Good thing you've got
the French drain. I've got one in the yard, but it
doesn't seem to do much good with a dreadful
downpour.
Gonna treat the yard for fire ants tomorrow. I'm down
a bit of a slope from my neighbor who never treats his
property for anything and so far, we've gotten termites
and carpenter ants and fire ants that regularly float
down here after every deluge. Lovely man, lousy
neighbor. I guess it could be worse.
DH had to rebuild the door to the storage shed this week......termites.
Last year tried to take note of what could survive in extreme heat and drought conditions....this year.....what can live under 3-4 inches of water. Seems I am always planning my flower garden for next year. Need to learn to live in the moment. Yesterday was unbelievable.....very nice....low humidity....a light breeze. We stayed outside for the majority of the day just resting and enjoying ourselves. Two grandsons were here with their spouses and the nine month old great-grandaughter. Couldn't have been better. They both stopped by unannouced and neither knew the other was here....just wanted to see DH and I.
Blessed

You betcha ! Sounds like a wonderful day, Lou.
Everybody WANTED to be there :o)
BIG rain over night but sunny this morning. Glad God watered the plants for me.
my casualties from rain:
salvia
rosemary (sigh, and they were such big, beautiful shrubs)
1 buddleia (nursery person said to trim back low and it will regrow)
most vinca, except the Nirvana series, they seem less susceptible to fungus
dusty miller
dwarf plumbago (waaaah!, can take the cold, but apparently doesn't like rain)
a couple of daylilies
Well, let's see.
1. 6 varieties of hollyhock now three years old...rust killed old and new...little seedlings now have rust.
2. Just cut down the phlox.....kept hoping but they were white with fungus.
3. Roses are suffering with black spot despite all of my efforts
4. Peonies are all mottled....don't know what is happening to them.
5. daisies are ill
6. Ballon flowers bolted and they are 4 ft tall.....bloom sporadically....not like before
7. datura is just sort of sulking....the seedlings are not thriving
8. brugs seem stunted.....have their leaves curled under and I cannot find a cause
9. Forget the tomatoes.
10. Hydrangeas are blooming small, green bunches. We are alkalyne so they should be pink. They were before the rain.
11. petunias, pinks, of all things....even coleus drowned.
On the other hand, the temperatures are great, the trees are so heavy with foliage they are drooping, the pecans are loaded, the pears are bent to the ground, the EE and ginger is singing, the crepe myrtles are dancing anything even remotely tropical is over the top.
It is raining. Again.
1 1/2 " in under a half hour and still going.......
We got over 4".... emptied the 2" overflowing guage twice since Friday morning.
Friday night we were swimming in New Braunfels. Several people had to go home from work early because of the flooding. I ended up working late - then had to find alternate routes home because of the flooding. Messy.
I bet the rafting would be pretty rough when you have flooding. The only time I have been we didn't check levels before we went and had to carry our tubes in some places! Up in the trees were debris left from the previous flood though, pretty scary!
I took cuttings from my brugs Sat. morning for the ru in Houston. I noticed how beautiful and green they were. Two of them were putting off blooms. Sunday morning it rained then the sun came out, and it got very hot. Sunday evening one of my brugs was basically boiled. One of the others was in almost the same limp, and I mean deathly limp condition. One of them didn't seem fazed but the third of the five was damaged as well. Needless to say there will be no blooms. I've got a lymph node infection and can't do anything much (dr. gave me 750 mg of antibiotics.) I finally got out there this evening to cut off the larger leaves and water about 8pm. I'll try to get them covered in the morning. Others have suggested poor soil, but they were thriving before. It's the rain, blistering sun, rain, blistering sun stuff that we've been getting that's doing it.
My Cycads are thriving on the same conditions.
Funny isn't it. Some plants prefer this kind of crazy weather.
Monday night it rained in sheets here. My daughter's
mulberry tree lost a huge branch - snapped right off
in a big gust of wind, and her neighbor's tree in the
back yard was totally uprooted. They also got water
in the house because the neighbor didn't put on a new
roof after the hail damage from the big storms a while
ago. Guess he's gonna do it now.
It poured so fast and so much that I got an armload of
towels ready to put along the baseboards in the family
room. Thank goodness, but I didn't need them. What a
year ! I'm waiting for autumn.
I've got springs coming up all over my place. Water is running even when it isn't raining.
Too be expected wherever the substrata is limestone. Past generations were from Glen Rose Texas....the very beginning of the Hill Country. Almost everybody had springs and took them for granted. That was before everyone had to have "lawns".
