Now I don't mind those... that's a common garden orb. They are one of the "good" spiders that can eat alot of bad bugs in the garden.
Show your Yellows.
I just like their colors...you know me...anything that makes for a good photo...
NIce shots, Karen. I think I saw that first one - at some point. Wonder what he is??? As for the 2nd...OMG you HOLD them? One flew out of our grill one time and "bit/pinched" my oldest DD...drew blood. I now have a healthy respect for them...course as I said nothing stands in my way of a good photo, though...
Ahhh...he's ready for his 8x10 glossy there!! Great eye shot!
We love them too, altho son got pinched once too.
She's beautiful, Karen. What causes them to hatch early, do you know?
There are usually 2-3 broods per season, depending on where you are. The first two broods will go through the cycle quickly... egg, caterpillar, cocoon, moth. The last cycle is supposed to (somehow) know that it's too late in the season to continue, whether it be because the days get shorter or the temps get cooler. That last cycle holds back, the cocoon remains in state through the winter months, then (somehow) knows to hatch in spring, as the days get longer and temps start to warm up.
I've tried to keep them dark and cool, but she somehow got the signal to hatch. I just hope the rest don't. Sweet gum trees are already starting to turn, and the leaves will drop soon... there would be nothing to eat for caterpillars even if I tried.
wow, what a beautiful luna moth!!! I'm hoping to see one some day. I just found out about them this year. I guess you have to look for them at night? We have a large black walnut tree in the backyard.
the luna moth is awesome. Thanks for sharing the picture.
