Very pretty Wind, I put in some White Dawn and America this year. I planted them on my fence, if I do well with them I might see about putting in more roses.
Here's my Cleopatra Canna
Show your Yellows.
Nice to see a rose in good shape. I try to take care of my neighbor's roses but they're in almost full shade. "Oh, they used to be so pretty." Well, the trees nearby have grown some in the last thirty years. I'm trying to talk her into letting me move them. They'd probably go crazy.
Here's a winter sowed Heliopsis helianthoides. I like it a lot, lots of flowers for one plant.
Please turn your head and look at these perennial sunflowers(?) from Critterologist. Do they look like your helianthoides? (I don't know if we've been down this road yet. ) After the swap I had to choose an out-of the-way-of contruction spot. Then I was unable to pamper it at all. Despite almost no care, it is blooming beautifully and has great dark green foliage. This is one of the best new-to-me plants of this year.
The top of the leaf is very rough. The flowers have the same dark ring in the center and the little indentation on the end of the petals is the same. edited to add link, see if this works

Sounds good to me! "sweet smooth oxeye" I might have to come up with a nickname for it, every name it's had for me so far is pretty long. The link worked, thanks.
Woohoooo! Thanks, you two! Other than thinking it was probably a Helianthus, I hadn't gotten any further on its ID.
That's a good link! I have to say I haven't noticed it trying to get "weedy" here. Other than a bunch of volunteers right around the original group of plants, it's not reseeding all over the garden (so far LOL).
I hope y'all gave it plenty of room... it'll get much taller and bushier next year! Mine is starting to slow down a little in the heat, but I'm betting it'll have another flush of bloom after this rain.
It's one of my favorites, too... I'm even liking it better than black-eyed susan, because it's more of a yellow than a gold color.
See, "mislabeled" trade packets can be a good thing! :-)
hi...thanks for the heliopsis postings...I have it and love it, got it from a friend and didn't know what is actually was! Maybe we should update the DG info page because it looks like the photo posted dosn't seem to be it. The leaves are not roughly serrated. Check it out: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/90270/
I think that's the photo that had me thinking H. helianthoides wasn't what I had... Maybe we should toss the question over to the Plant ID forum for input? But I think you folks have nailed it.
Good idea. When I get outside today, I'm going to ex amine mine for the 'pistil in the ray flower' that sounded like the most distinctive part.
Yes I have the pistils. I think I got a good clear closeup photo but haven't downloaded yet to be sure

Some pictures were removed from that plant file page a while back - if you read the comments, one refers to a photo that's not there anymore. I've seen threads where people posted this plant with variegated leaves too. That usda link is to just one variety, there are others that might have that simpler leaf.
And frostweed generally knows her stuff... :-)
Yes, Texas has amazing native plants and resources, and frostweed is one of them.
I know some lucky kids who just got back from Texas, all I got was a seed catalog. Not even a t-shirt.
I got one of the variegated ones in the Bluestone Perennials half price sale earlier this summer. It's gorgeous. I hope it spreads. Bluestone has a 20% off sale now too. Let me know if anyone needs the code.

This is the one I got. I think this photo shows the foliage a bit better than their photo. Hmm, the foliage is still lighter and brigher than the photo shows. The variegation is a creamy white.

Sally and Critter, Are you tal(ing about the flowers I got from Critter at the swap? Shown in this pic along with some Blac(eye Susans? The ones I thought you called Not Chocolate Daisies? Note I'm having a little trouble with one of the (eys in my (eyboard, can you guess which one??????
http://davesgarden.com/forums/fp.php?pid=3796386
Yep, that's the one. I figured it was some sort of Helianthus, but the only thing I know for sure it that it's *not* Chocolate Daisy (Berlandiera lyrata) like the trade packet said! I also shared some seeds in packets with "Too Tall To Be Chocolate Daisy" on the label with a note that I didn't know what they were but liked them.
For you, Holly... KKKKKKKKkkkkkkkkkkKKKKkkkkkkkk
;-)
Shutterbuggin'! nice bold sunflower pic, should there be any other kind of SF pic? you have some nice whites added too I saw.
Everybody has such great flower pics on all these 'color' threads. I didn't plan well for summer color. Didn't plan on drought either, maybe I'm glad I had less to worry about losing.
Ah Sally, thank you!! I don't plan anything...my yard front and back look like sheer confusion to most, I'm sure!! I just plant for what I like...which is either fragrance or something fun to photograph...oopps, and my latest craze butterfly and hummer plants
this was a surprise! is there such a thing as a tall evening primrose? this came along with the new yarrow I bought; I thought I'd let it grow to see what it was ~ I'm so glad I didn't take it for a weed. Anyone know what it might be? It has 4-5 branches all with buds at the top, one is at least 3-4' tall
I think it's Oenethera biennis common evening primrose, which some might call a weed. I always have a few here and there. This is a pic of the rosette in winter. Last winter I went on a winter-rosette safari in my yard to record the difference in the various overwintering things I usually have- because pretty soon I will probably have a hard time recalling these things names~~~ lol. I am pretty good in my yard at telling what's this, or rose campion, or mullein....
Wind I remember seeing the evening primrose in front of a house that I use to travel by quit often the bed was about 3 foot deep across the front of this small house. You couldn't help but notice the mass of yellow flowers.
Sally, I hope you added your winter-rosette pictures to plantfiles they would be a nice addition. Very helpfull with the ruler in the picture.
Thanks so much for the id, I can't wait to go out and look at the base and see if the rosette looks like your picture. Can't do it yet...believe it or not this is our second day of RAIN!!!!!! Pouring now. Thats probably what it is though. At first I was thinking of the St. Johns Wort, but the leaves in that are different and the inside of the bloom is diff.
I hope it does spread in mass because it is blooming now which is late and most of the flowers in that area have already bloomed.*
*except for a beautiful New England Aster (A. novae anglea) which blooms late coinciding with the monarc migration.
ha ha I was focused on my mission that day! I did put it in PF.
Now this year's seedlings of EP look somewhat different than this winter pic. I can try to get a pic of one over the weekend maybe.........I have a master's degree in ID ing my yard's weeds.
Sally, This year I got a lot of new plants that will be reseeding themselves next year and I just know that I will be weeding the wrong things next year. I've been taking pics and notes, but a lot of these look pretty similar when they first start to grow. I can just see me next year posting weed or plant pics on the ID forum. LOL
Beck - you using that clip on macro or just your lens? Awesome pics...that first one is stunning! Maybe the 2nd was a self seeder????
Nope just the lens :-)
Dang...you go girl!!
Chris, I have the same trouble with yellow sometimes they seen to wash out. Too much sunlight maybe. The pic I posted of my Yellow Datura is washed out, the blooms are really much more yellow than shown. I'd like to try those Asters again next year they are very pretty maybe we'll have better luck next time.
This came very true to color guess I could post it in white or yellow. These sweet little things have been blooming all summer long in the shade of my clematis. So pretty and petite.
Oh forgot, Nice yellow ball you have growing there. Great pic. My mushrooms aren't nearly as attractive.

I like mushrooms in the yard, so interesting. Wonder what it will look like tomarrow? Have to post another picture.
Pansies are sweet, I have some still blooming too.
I've had some of those! They seem to appear put of nowhere then stay awhile.
