'Happily married' - oxymoron?? Hee hee. How about you Harper?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Happily married IS NOT AN oxymoron. Victor is an oxymoron!

xxx,
Carrie

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Actually, it feels VERY weird to be married this long - I mean I only feel about 37 years old - so unless I was a child bride, something doesn't add up. . . . But then, I have a 27 year old daughter, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't 10 when she was born . . .

Actually, my whole life is inside out. I was a functioning adult at 11 (well, someone had to be - dysfunctional family lol), left home when I was 16 (worked my way through high school - which I hated - high school - not work), finally started university at 29, graduated with a doctorate many years (and 2 children) later. In fact, finally got to be a teenager at 39 when I lived on campus for 7 months! Started my career at an age when most people are consulting financial advisors on how to save for retirement! I think I will have to work until I am 85 to get my money's worth out of all that education. lol.

I feel totally out of sinc with my own generation and not quite in step with generation X . DH and I joke about being "born out of time" lol

BUT I DEFINITELY CANNOT BELIEVE I HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 30 YEARS!!!!! (thank god, I have a super guy! ) Anyway the actual anniversary is Aug. 20. so still a few weeks away.

Kassia, if you don't already have a Spading Fork put it at the top of your list. Very versatile.

Make sure it's "heavy-duty" I bent one of the tines on DH's fork.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I broke one of the tines at a Habitat for Humanity landscaping job, lol. Cheap donation thing.
They are great for lifting bulbs & tubers without cutting them all up. Spring transplants are a breeze without cutting the errant long root.
Congrats, Michaela.

Last January it would have been our 60th wedding anniversary to the best of men but some one needed an angel two years ago, miss him terribly.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

So sorry to hear that Maria.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

You must miss him terribly after 59 years of creating memories together. . . .

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

Yes, I do but wonderful memories have helped to lessen my sorrow and time does heal. I should add all my dear DG friends were were such a big help for me to accomplish that, will always be very gratefull

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You're welcome. It has a nice subtle fragrance too. It's one of my favorite DL's.

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

My garden is only 5 years old though I have been gardening all my married life. We had to sell the old farmhouse that was my husbands grandfathers to enable DH to move about in a wheelchair. I did not have much time to devote it to gardening almost needed eyes in the back of my head to watch him, decided not to pay much attention to put a marker on flowers, I suppose I should have.

here is a picture of the main garden

Beautiful Maria!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I love old roses. How nice to have a real heirloom rose.

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Congrats Michaela! You don't look old enough to have been doing anything for 30 years! Brian and I will celebrate 25 years this Feb.
I want to go to Las Vegas and renew our vows before an Elvis preacher. We met in costume, so this should be great.

Happy upcoming anniversery Seandor. A wonderful achievement.

Maria, What a beautiful love story. Congratulations on a wonderful marriage and my condolences on your loss.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Congrats to you too Martha. Be sure to take photos of that!!

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes years sure go by FASTand I can NOT believe we are going to have our 43rd wedding anniversary on July 15th.
I think I am 20 years younger until I look into the mirrow ;-))

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Congrats to you too!! My parents celebrated their 48th a couple of weeks ago. Three times as long as us! I joke a lot about marriage (and everything else) but I am very, very happily married and my parents were great role models. I always knew I would marry and have a family.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Congratulations Martha and Eglantyne! Good for you too Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thank you Harper. How many of us have spouses who share our gardening passion?? I certainly DON'T!! Luckily, my kids are interested - so far.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Mine appreciates how beautiful it is sometimes, but other times I have to point stuff out and say "Look how pretty!" and he ooo's and ahhhh's at the appropriate cues.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

That's way better than mine. We will be somewhere and she will notice a flower and ask, "Why don't you grow that?" It will be something I have grown for years! The ironic thing is that we always went to gardens and arboreta before we got the house and she loved it. Can't figure it out.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

It'll all make sense when you least expect it....

Um... that's my answer and I'm stickin' to it!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

My wife doesn't join me working in the garden and her eyes crooss after my talking about gardening for more than 10 minutes BUT she is very supportive of my spending time and money and loves the results. Not bad. (17 years)

Congratulations Eglantyne!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Congratulations to all of you guys!!! I really admire people that stays together for a long time... specially nowadays!!!! my parents stayed together for 38 years... and boy! it was trully hard 80% of the time...

anyway, Maria, your rose is great... I want to see it... when are you going away??? I am taking some days off pretty soon...

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

My husband loved gardening too more with the vegetable garden then flowers, he was a very busy man with his work , teaching at RI School of Design plus his own business. Actually he was a farmer at heart, domestic animals where his hobby, cattle, cows, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens were another thing to take care off. Life was good.
Both our parents where married for more then 60 years also great role models.
All four of my children love gardening, and are very domesticsted, even the boys know all about it and even know how to cook. Told them a long time ago do not always depend on someone to feed you, lol lol. My daughters have beautiful gardens, some of you have met one , she drove to the RU.

Right now I am in a hectic mode, trying to pack and leaving instructions as far as house and gardens are concerned. Samson, who is my golden retriever will be in the kennel to morrow, he loves it there which makes me very happy while I am away for nearly two month in the beautiful state of Washington. I will be looking at mountains, American and Canadians Cascades right in the backyard of my friends, reminds me of my Austria.
Hope all of you will have a wonderful summer with good health and enjoyments
Maria

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

All of you who have managed to find the right person and stay with them have my admiration and congratulations. I think it is a Joan Baez song (maybe someone else) that says it best - with all my holy freedom - what is it that I have to show? You have history, you have happy times and hard times that you made it through to remember and you have the future in whatever form it takes to look forward to with someone else to share it.
Maria - my deepest sympathy for your loss. I hope that remembering the warmth of your life together will in some way comfort you going forward.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maria, thank you and enjoy your Summer in such beautiful part of the country. I look forward to visiting the NW one day soon. There are so many nurseries there so the gardening must be great!! I love the mountains.

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey, Carrie - that is pretty cool - as to what age we look - well, I am glad no one is taking my picture right now! I "clean up" nicely, but most of the time I am dressed in rags, with dirt stains at the knees and wearing thick glasses! (and no, I will not post a picture!)
