Do you really trade all that much anymore?

As a non-working college student, I can't really afford to pay shipping prices anymore! I love trading and I remember how active the trading community used to be but since I've been back, I noticed that it's verrry slow.

Even seeds. Sending a sasbe usually costs more than the actual value of the seed.

I basically only give away plants & seed for postage now.

Has anyone else just about stopped trading due to the increase in postage?

Well, I'm pretty new and a fairly new gardener plus I live out in the boonies where there is limited access to perennials. So for me, I find plant trading pretty exciting.
I have met some wonderful people and gotten some great plants. Things I can't just go and buy at my nearest garden center and if I have to pay postage that equals the price of the plant I am still getting a plant that is desirable to me.

I have the same problem, my "collection" isn't much of a collection anymore.

I never traded much but I'm still out there sporadically giving plants away as gifts as well as the occassional bird feeder or garden accessory. People have been generous with me and Skunk Cabbage, Putty Root Orchids, and the Butterfly Ginger I wanted really bad come to mind as having been gifted to me out of the blue. Then there was a hand crocheted scarf and hat set that matched my winter coat perfectly sent to me by a DGer and a beautiful "pick-me-up" hand made necklace that was sent my way as a surprise from another DGer. I've been very blessed in the department of "random acts of kindness" so if somebody contacts me and wants something that I have extra of or if somebody contacts me and asks for seed, I will try my best to accommodate them more so because I like to share. I do it to be able to do something nice for somebody as well as to give somebody that "hard to find" native that they lust for but... I'm not a non-working college student.

Getting through college any way you can is extremely important so if you are giving away plants and seed for postage, I consider that beyond generous. It's your time that is worth so much when you need to be studying and in class. It's not easy packing plants properly and the cost of gas alone to get to the PO is incredibly high these days.
