I found this in my friends back yard. At least 6 ft by 6 ft, not well cared for.

Hi Brjustin, looks like Hypericum (St Johns Wart or sometimes called Rose of Sharon, but maybe someone else will come up with other names for you, if it is Hypericum, it is as tough as old boots, hence it surviving on neglect, it is a nice summer flowering shrub and can take a good pruning after flowering, then give it a feed and lots of water, it will come back again every year. hope this helps, WeeNel.
I agree, looks like Hypericum. There are a number of different species though and I'm not sure which one yours is
