I have read the instructions on how to deadhead the spent flowers of Salvias, but how can you tell the difference in ones that are going to bloom and the spent ones? Thanks for future help! Diane
Salvia Deadheading?
On the ones that are spent, where the flowers used to be is open with a little brown in the center. The new ones have small, tight green buds. I've started deadheading mine while they still have just a little purple left at the top so I can be real sure I'm getting a spent one. You do have to look closely to see the difference. I never do mine without having my glasses on, LOL!
Goulabelle: I do the same thing with mine..and the grow back twice a big and really fast.
Thanks for your tip. I also have Salvias for the first time, and I wonder whether deadheading means that I pinch off the top brown flower of each stalk or the whole stalk or each individual flower? rfirestone
I pinch mine off just below the first set of leaves. I don't know if it's the right way but I get new growth right away from the second set of leaves. Only problem I found is that it gets really tall and flop over if it gets windy.
