Hansa roses

i just purchased some hansa roses and the nursery told me I could prune them back and keep them any height I want them. I want them to stay about 3'. The tag says they will grow to 5-6' but that's taller
than I want. Is that true? Can I keep them pruned back to 3'?

Hi dlocey, yes you can and should prune your roses, this helps to keep them healthy and gets rid of any weak, damaged and dead wood/stems, you would, depending where you live, prune lightly in autumn just to shorten the hight and stop them blowing about in the winds as this can loosen the roots, then do another prune in early spring so that any growing tips that got damaged either by frost/wind are removed, at this time, you can give them a real good prune leaving stems abot 6/8 inches above the ground, you always cut down to where you see a new bud on the stem, one that faces outwards, and cut at an angle just above that bud, so take your time till you get used to it, give a good feed with either blood/fish/bone meal, or a rose fertiliser, this will help the bushes to form nice new growing buds, however, as you specify these roses to stay at 3 feet, then you are asking a lot from roses bread to reach 5/6 feet, every time you prune bits off as they get too tall, you will be cutting off half the buds that roses make to form flowers, they just dont undrstand you want small and not full grown shrubs, these flower on the new wood/stems they make each year, it seems a shame to cut good healthy roses down to an unnatural size, if you cold choose a selection from shorter growing roses that dont reach 6 feet in one season, so hope you aint dissapointed if the grow more than your 3 feet needs. Good Luck, WeeNel.
