Snap Bean Question

Rome, GA(Zone 7b)

My snap beans have had a hard year... First they got attacked by bean beetles. They ate the leaves full of holes and even stripped some of the plants completely. I eventually had to spray Pyrethrin to get rid of them. Then they didn't get nearly enough water due to our drought.

When they were 12-18" high some of them flowered but most were just too tired to flower I think. Well, I've kind of ignored them since then and yesterday to my surprise I found some beans on them. I picked everything off of them amounting to about 3 quarts. The plants were very spotty, some had a lot of beans most had none.

So my question is, are the plants done at this point or will they flower again and produce more beans?

I think I planted 'Provider' and 'Contender' if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

I'm a newbie in veggie gardening. My snap beans were doing fairly well until the really hot weather hit in the last two weeks. They have slowed down a lot and the plants look unhappy even though I've been watering them. The last couple of days it has been cooler here, and they are looking a little better. They are starting to flower again.

I don't know for sure, but I would think your beans will produce again, too.

Thanks Karen,

I found some more beans on mine but only about a handful. They're flowering sporadically but I'm beginning to think they're never going to produce very many beans. Ah well, there's always next year.

The rabbitts ate mine, next year I will put a fence of some sorts around them.

I have had beans to make it through the summer and start up again when the weather gets cooler. They would make more then than they did all summer. Unless you need the space, let them stay until they start to die.

In optimum weather, beans will rebloom, and produce a second crop. If you have the resources to water them some, if in a drought, and to add just a little miracle grow, then you may have a better second crop, than the first because the weather will be cooler, and they won't have that stress to deal with. Good luck.

The beans have been steadily growing and I have been picking 2-4 quarts a week off of them. But they never have seemed to fully recover. The beans are still very sporadic. I'll find a spot on a couple plants with a lot, but go 10-20 feet of row and still find absolutely none.

Kind of off my original question, but does anyone have recommendations on a type of bush bean that has a good taste? I've eaten mine and they're all right but aren't anything special for taste.

The best bush bean, and the only one in my opinion, is the white half runner. It has good growth habits, tolerates many types of soil, and bears well, plus they are the best tasting ones I have ever had.
