Is it too late for me to put some asiatic lilies in my garden. I am in zone 5. I love the way they look. Also, I was wondering if anyone knows of any flower that is similar, but not as tall. I have another area I would like to fill in. Thanks!!
asiatic lilies
Hi teresab, I would say it is a tad too late to plant lily bulbs now, they are getting past the flowering stage, from now till the next few weeks depending where you live, you might be able to pick some up at a garden center in pots that are in bud or in flower, you could then plant these ones into the garden, after flowering, you cut the dead flowers off, let the foliage die down, feed the area around the bulbs, and next year, they will come up and flower in that position again, they only flower once each year and the flowering season is really short, but there are some really lovely ones, and if you can, go for ones with the perfume, there are several other flowering bulbs, but as with the lily's, these only flower once also, it would be a better idea
for you to send away for some bulb catalogues that will be comming onto the market any day now, you look at the listings and the pictures, then you will see exactly what you like and dont like, the size, tall small colours etc, then get these either from the company or look out for them in the garden centers soon as they are avaliable, each zone will have a different time for planting bulbs, but as I live in a cold UK area, I try to get mine planted in autumn, this gives them some time to get roots down and also to build up energy for the flowers to bloom, hope this helps you some, others may come into the thread and be able to give you names of lily's they have tried and tested, Good luck, WeeNel.
