I received a bare root Red Oak Tree (about 2' tall) for Earth Day. I knew I wasn't going to be able to plant in the ground right away so I planted it in a pot. It was doing well in the pot and this past weekend I finally had some time and planted it in my yard and now I'm concerned with how I've planted it. I followed all the steps and planted the tree properly. My only concern is that the tree's trunk starting from ground up (about 3") is growing at about a 60 degree angle and the rest is perfectly straight. So, when I planted it, I planted it straight based off the top part not the 3" at the bottom. Should I have centered the tree based on the 3" at the bottom and tried to stake it so the top part would eventually straighten? I just want be sure that when it's 50' plus in height it's going to be ok.
Thank you,
A friend of trees
Red Oak Tree - crooked trunk
Hi billy, not too sure what you have done from your discription, but as a rule, you plant all trees to the same depth they were in the ground, before it came to you, you will see this mark on the trunk above the roots, yes I would put a stake in for the tree, it is a baby and will need a bit if support till it puts out new roots to help it remain upright, I personaly would aim for the top to be upright, I would get back in touch with who you purchased the tree from as from what I read, you have bought a tree, which will see you off the face of this earth, and already it is crooked at the trunk, they may send you a better specimine, but anyway back to your prob, with the stake, dont use this to try straighten the trunk or you will have to tie it too tightly to the stake, and then it will have to try grow in a different direction, if you get the top growing head right, the trunk, just might with maturity grow upright, I feel you have lost the mark where the tree grew in the soil before you got it and now it is either in the earth too deep or too shallow, you need to check the trunk for the marking of the soil previous to now, just maybe, before you put it in the pot, you had it leen against a wall or the likes, and you let it bend a bit, it is imposible to know without picture of the tree bottom, hope this is of some help, be a shame to spoil a really lovely tree. good luck, WeeNel.
