I have just moved to Virginia Beach, VA and would like to start planting a vegetable garden and do some landscaping with plants and flowers. I am originally from Northern, Illinois and have no idea where to begin here. What is the soil like and what works well? I could use any tips as to where to start.
New to VA gardening
You might want to post your question in the Mid-Atlantic gardeners forum in addition to this forum. I notice quite a few VA gardners over there who might not visit the Beginners Forum.
Hi Tracey hope your move went well, I have no idea what the soil type is in your area, but you can buy a cheep testing kit from DIY stores or garden centers, then you will know really what you are deeling with,
I always recomend that for a new garden, if someone else has had this plot, then dont do anything but weed for the first year as there will be lots of plants underground and will come up later, or in spring and it might be a shame to dig them out. As for doing veg AND landscape, it is a long labourious task, and you need to plan it well or you make costly mistakes, get in a mess or get far to ambisious and get fed up because the results are less than your dreams for the end results, so go slow but sure, Rome was never built in a day, if you are really sure where you want the veg plot to be, get it started now, you still have time for a few summer things like carrots, salads and beets, but more time for winter veg, as they will have time to get going if planted now. as for landscapeing, you need to measure the area, draw a few scetches, and what features you need, what you like and lastly, what you can affored, it aint cheep, go to the librery and pick up a few books on landscapeing for beginners, yard layouts etc, and it will let all your own ideas flood into your head, a bit of that idea as well as a bit of this, they are also good at showing you how to do a layout plan so you can then cost your ideas before you start, by then find you have a slope, a long narrow dip or whatever, look at where you get sun/shade etc, as all these are important factors, what do you want as a feature to look out the windows onto etc. hope this helps you to get it all started, someone on this site already said go slow, easy/better grow, so Good luck, hope your move works out good for you and yours. WeeNel.
