roly poly zucchini

Bonham, TX

Hi all,

i think I planted roly-poly zucchini this year. I'm not sure because I forgot to label the plant. The first fruits off the plant were close to the root of the plant and each one was about 5 inches around. They were light green with white specs. They tasted like zucchini.

Now, on the same plant, I have this HUGE fruit that doesn't look like the roly-polys. I looks more like a pumpkin. It's dark green, though. This plant is confusing me! Does anybody have experience with it?

Thanks:-)

The round zucchini ( Roly Poly, Cue Ball, Geode, Tonda de Nizza) can go from base ball size to basketball size in a matter of hours. I suspect that you are seeing one that you missed and left on the vine for a couple of days.

thanks for the pic!

Yep, that's what I picked first. It looked just about exactly like it. The fruit that is on the vine about 6 feet from the root is a lot bigger and a lot darker green. Very confusing:-)

Maybe its catching. My One Ball a bright yellow round zucchini are becoming dark green as the temperatures climb. The only other cultivar I have had do that is the Patty Pan "Flying Saucer". I thought at first it was an extreme case of cucumber mosaic virus, but its not. Seems to be genetic. Have not had it happen with the light green ones tho. Cue Ball is still spitting out by the dozens. One ball is not setting full yellow ones and most are the dark green on the left. This began as the temps climbed close to the 100 degree mark.
