seed pods on cannas

Foley, AL

My orange flowered "Pratoria" canna has beautiful flowers--when it flowers. After the blossoms dry and fall off, there are ball-like "seed pods" on the stem below where the flowers grew. Should these be left on or snapped off? It has lots of foliage, but not many blossoms. It is in full sun and kept well watered.

Hi Uglybug, on each flower STEM of Canna's that is the only flower you will get, some as they mature, throw up a good few stems, therefore you will get several flower stems from the one Tuber, so as each flower stem / flowers die off, then you deadhead (the seed pod) this stops the plant useing up energy making seeds, as you want all the energy to go back into the tuber so it can store all this goodness/energy for next years flowers, sometimes if several stems come from the one tuber as I said before, then some stems will flower after others have died off and you get a longer show of flowers, dont cut off the leaves though, you want these to die down and go brown before you cut them off at the base, this die off also adds goodness back into the tuber, if your Canna's are in the ground/garden, then give them a feed after flowering and a mulch of some compost to keep them warm from frost/ over dry from heat depending on your zone, I try to feed again in spring/summer, soon as the new growth restarts again, after flowering, a lot of people like the exotic foliage from the Canna's and maybe plant other things beside it to show it off, hope this helps you, happy gardening, WeeNel.
