Portulaca Help please....

Mechanicsburg, PA

Recently found the portulaca - love it! However, over the last week or two I've noticed the "leaves" are turning yellow and looking soggy from the base moving out. And I'm certainly not getting as many blooms as when I first potted. I haven't been watering it much, but it is out in the rain (i have it in a strawberry pot) Is it being overwatered from the rain or is it not getting enough? Looks pretty dry right now.... I have stuff at the bottom of the pot for drainage and I used a succulent potting soil. Help anyone?

It sounds like too much water to me. I would move the pot into the garage or under cover to prevent more rain watering it. They prefer hot dry. Once it waarms up and rains stop, it should start to behave itself.

About watering. I always use the finger test. Press on the soil if it feels damp don't water. Momo is right, they don't need a lot of water. If you are getting lots of rain and cool temps you might want to move it to a drier location that still gives it lots of sun.

If you should find that it has developed root rot you can replant the stems. You will know in a few days. In containers they might need a little fertilizer, maybe once a month and very lightly, more is not better with this plant. Use a fertilizer that says it promotes blooms (has a high middle number) for best results.

When you plant is 'feeling better' send us a photo. We all love photos of other's 'babies'.

These are not my babies I took the photo in a park, but, I like em anyway>

Rain? What's that?

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Joy,

Rain is a clear liquid that looks exactly like the stuff that comes out of the end of the hose. Only it falls out of the sky and you don't get a bill for it later. And it tastes better than the hosed in stuff.

In FL ours is warm, sweet and not often seen this year, like you we could use more.

Looks like we will be growing more of these>
