Hi, I bought 4 plants labeled new guinea impatiens and am not sure what to do with them. (I am a plantaholic of sorts and often just get things without thinking about where/what etc.) So far they have just been in their pots on the west side of the house, getting morning shade and afternoon sun. They've been doing pretty well, sometimes start to fade and wilt but come right back with some water. We are trying to place/plant some of my many miscellaneous purchases and DH wants them to "go" somewhere. Should I plant them in the ground, or into containers?? I've read that in some places they can be perennials -- I'm on the Gulf Coast of MS, Zone 8B. I was considering planting them on the east side of the house where they would get all the morning sun and then afternoon shade. Would they make it there? Any suggestions/advice is appreciated! Thank you.
new guinea impatiens where to put them?
I'm pretty sure they can make it in a shaded area. I bet morning sun and afternoon shade would be better than the other way around so they don't fade in the hot sun....hopefully someone who knows more than I do will come along.....good luck!
Kristie
I agree with Kristie, I think they'd like it better with the AM sun and PM shade, especially as your weather gets hotter.
Hi Bernrice,
My experience with New Guinea impatiens is that they will tolerate more sun than regular impatiens; however, as you have already discovered, they will wilt pretty fast, if they get dry. So I agree with Kristie and ecrane.
One thing I know for sure is that they do not tolerate cold at all; they are the first to succumb to our chilly fall weather. You might be better off leaving them in pots; in the event of a cold snap, you can bring them indoors.
Sharon
Thank you so much Sharon, Ecrane and Kristie! I really appreciate your feedback. You've been very helpful!
Hi bernice, the other girls are right about too much sun, I'd put them in a mixed container so you can move them about till you find the spot they like, they are real easy to take cuttings from, in a glass of water will do, non flowering shoots are faster, also I will say, they dont like a lot of water on the stems and can cause rot, so try aim the water into the soil if pos, give them a half strength liquid feed about once a week and they generaly flower all summer long so deadhead as often as you can, good luck, WeeNel.
