Burned soil area

China Grove, NC(Zone 7a)

I have an area in my yard where we had burned brush for many years. We have stopped burning in this area and now I have planted some Pampas grass. It will not grow and has been there for maybe a month and has not done anything.,. It looks just like it did when I planted it. Is there something I need to do to this area to make it suitable for planting anything? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi lincolngirl. Wood ash is highly alkaline, and Pampass Grass likes neutral to mildly acidic soils. You will probably need to amend the soil in that spot to help your plants grow properly. Things to use would include manure, organic compost, continuing long term use of high nitrogen fertilizers.

This advice is quoted from http://www.essortment.com/home/phsoiltestame_sykq.htm :

Quoting:
It is easier to neutralize an overly acid soil than it is to neutralize an alkaline soil. Highly alkaline soil may require several amendments applied over several growing seasons. If you want to start a new garden bed in an area with excessively alkaline soil, consider one of the following strategies:

- Create raised beds using neutral top soil.

- Bury containers in the alkaline soil to give the appearance of a garden bed while you alter the pH.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Good Luck!

A month is hardly enough time for the plant to start growing into a new site, these plants have a large root system, so it probebly needs a lot more time to settle and put on enough roots for it to throw out new top growth, as you only planted it a month ago, I would get it out the ground, add some compost peat or some other humas to the soil and replant it, give it a good drink also as they are greedy plants, I had one for about 3 years befor I saw anything happen to it and I have acidic soil in my garden, so I say give it the right treatment now before it starts to grow roots and then water, be patient, it will grow for you in time. good luck, WeeNel.
