? about my daylillies

Plano, IL

I love daylillies and I put a mix in a pretty large part of my garden. We are in new construction, so we don't have that much stuff in. My question is what can I expect from them? So far, I have had 2 flowers open up and fall off. Is it just not doing alot because this is the first year, or is it the wrong time of year? Any advice is welcome!

Hi Teresab, you have answered your questions all by yourself, your probs are a mixture of these point you mentioned, Day Lily's, as the name sugests, each flower only lasts for a day, then I deadhead mine, and new ones are ready to open up, just for a day, but as the plants mature over a few years, then you get clusters of flowerheads all just ready to bloom, they are quite thirsty plants, also like a good feed, I feed mine spring then end of season when I start to tidy up my borders at the end of the year, this helps to give the plants energy to bulk up more for the following year, it is unuaual for the flowers to drop off themselves, so inspect the plants to make sure nothing has nibbled them just at the flower heads, if no, then give them a good drink if you have had really warm/hot weather, because they are new, they just might be in a wee bit of new planting shock, they need time to settle into there new garden, were they in pots when you got them, if so, they were prob too dry to go into the ground, if they were bare rooted plants, they need water, fed and time to settle, they like to be in sunshine for a good part of the day, but not baking with no moisture. Good Luck, hope this helps you a bit. WeeNel.
