My bush daisies have been in the ground about two months and have looked spectacular up to now. They are becomming brown at the base of the foliage and the daisies are droopy. I have been fertilizing the sandy Central Florida soil that they are in every two weeks. It has just begun to rain in the afternoon, so I have not watered them. Did I over-fertilize? I am new at this and have started small with Marguerite daisies, brown eyed Susan's, pentas and a mix of butterfly friendlies. The Bush Daisies have grown so well and are a focal point in the bed. Help, please!
Bush daisy problem
Hi Frogfarm, I would say too much feed and too little water, if you feed the plants as much in the dry season, then the feed just sits there and the roots will burn with this, also, as soon as you see your plants drooping and they are in sandy soil, they are asking for water, as you are new to gardening, I would say you have done really well to get as far as you have with the conditions you have, so well done you, dont give up because of a few dissapointments. Even if it has rained, with sandy soil, you will never over water, also it cant hold onto plant food when it rains/watered as it drains away really fast so I would be inclined to add plant feed into the water as you go, this way, you know exactly how much water you are giving at any one time.
Next time you go to do your planting, you should try add as much compost/manure as you can pos get hold of, dig it into the plant hole or the whole border, and mix with your sandy soil, this will help to retain some extra moisture, then as you water, the soil will have something to hold onto the water. But for now, deadhead all the flowers that have done flowering, give plenty water, and this will help the plants send out new flowers so you can enjoy a longer season. If you are enjoying the new garden bug you have caught, then try look in your local librery for some books on Gardening for beginners etc, then you will pick up loads of hints and tips for the conditions you have, so keep going with the gardening and Good Luck, hope the plants pick up again. WeeNel.
Thanks. I'll give 'em a little more to drink. I did put in composted manure before I started the bed. Should I add more around root area? The bed is mulched and received full sun.
