I have 4 of these weigelas in front of my house that I planted in Mid-April. They started with some beautiful flowers about a month ago, but now they are all gone! Will they come back this year? Or is the flowering life-span that short? I am a new gardener, but eager to learn.
Wine and roses weigela
I have two weigelas,a wine and roses and a pink princess. Both of the plants have been in place for many years and always bloomed for a very long time. This year they bloomed for about a week and it was all over. This has happened to several of my other plants. I have a serviceberry that didn't bloom at all for the first time in over ten years. A flowering almond had very few blooms and they were gone in a matter of a few days. I also had the same problem with a redbud and several other plants/trees. We had a colder than normal winter here and a late freeze that may have caused the problem. Maybe next year will be better. The wine and roses were a very good choice.
In Northern Alabama the "biggest" show is the long spring blooming. Mine was very good this spring for Wine & Roses. It's mid-June now and I see four or five blooms - but I think this is from twigs which were broken in spring and are acting as new growth. Mine usually don't offer noticable flowering in our hot summer.
My wine and roses wigelia is still blooming beautifully here in Victoria. Does this plant like cool temps? It's been cool here.
It must like cooler temperatures--Here in West Virginia, they only bloom for a couple of weeks in May. At least in my area.
I've had one for about 7 years now. Mine has always bloomed for about 2 1/2-3 weeks and then will bloom again but not as much later in late July and then sporadic blooms in August. I don't keep a journal and really should so I could tell you exactly but this is usually how mine has gone. This year was a definitely a shorter bloom time though. Some things this year just seem to be out of sync bloom-wise. My coneflowers are in bloom and they usually don't bloom until 2nd week or so of July. Also Karl Foerster ornamental grass seems a bit early as well. Other things are late such as my Annabelle hydrangea and Butterfly bushes. Unfortunately though all the garden pests seems to be doing just fine and adding to the mix! Be sure to give them a feeding next April. Regular feedings have really helped mine. Good luck!
My weigelas did a lot better this year than last year. They all bloomed for well over a month. All of my other flowering trees/bushes also bloomed much better this year. The only problem that I am having with one of my weigelas is that it has grown so large that it looks like a weeping willow and is blocking a walk. I know very little about trimming or thinning them. I'll have to search for info.
This is a photo of the pink princess weigela that I mentioned. It is about ten feet in diameter and the long branches will be touching the ground soon. If it were growing out in the yard I would probably leave it alone but it is blocking a walkway and shading other plants. I would welcome information about trimming the plant.
