Hi, I have a friend that wants a start from my Korean Lilac bush. I just read the "Cutting Edge" article. Does anyone know if there is a 'best' time to take the cuttings for this? Now, summer or fall?
LILAC CUTTINGS
Hi shune, this is not an easy task that you want to do, they are quite hard to get to root and even longer to grow on into a garden size sgrub, but if you have the time/patience it can be achieved, so hear goes. In JULY/August, you will take heal cuttings, (that is a cutting from the branch that still has a tiny bit of the branch attatched, so how you do this is as follows, look at your shrub for a NEW little growth/branch and instead of cutting it off, you kind of tear it away at the joint where it sprouted from the old branch with a bit of the old branch attatched, take a few of these as they will not always grow roots, then get a sharp knife/razor blade, and trim off a bit if the heal, that is the little bit of old branch still on your cutting, then place this in a pot (about 3/4 to a pot around the edge of 6 inch pot) the soil needs to be a mix of sand and potting compost, you need a heated propogater, bottom heat at temp about 16c or 61f, then water the pot, into the heated frame, keep an eye on them as you will need to mist them every few days/week, the cuttings will take maybe a couple of months to root, and then pot into indevidual pots, keep in a coolish place for 18/24 months, by then, they should be large enough to plant into the garden.
For some of us who dont have heated propogation boxes, you can make one from a large, clear drink/juice container, cut the bottom off the washed container, and place over the pot your cuttings are in, remove the screw top to allow ventilation. place this in a warm, light room where it will get light but not direct sunlight. mist and water as before. As you can see, this is not a quick easy propogation to do, but it can be done, so good luck WeeNel.
