the first one finally bloomed. now i'm waiting on the rest. here's a pic.
finally gladiolus
Hi gypsyseagod, so pleased for you that your Gladioli's have started to flower for you, I think I told you earlier that they only flower once per year and you let the greenery die down naturaly, then you can cut the dead stuff off, give them a feed around the bulbs, so they build up energy for the following year, and they start all over again, I advise marking where the bulbs are when they die down as they are so easy trampled as you tidy up end of season. If you wish to cut the flowers for indoors, cut down at the bottom of the stem and leave some leaves, cut the flowers when the bottom flower just starts to open enough to show some colour and they will last longer in your vase, good luck and well done, WeeNel.
very cool, thanx. another question.... the cats broke a few over about 1-2ft up the main leaves. can i cut them there or just wait for them to come back next season ??
If you have any plant that has been broken, then it is always best to make a clean cut just below where the damaged part was, on a slant so no water can sit in the cut, or if a shrub, cut to above the nearest bud on the stems, as the cat managed to break the Gladioli, then could you put in a cane and tie the stems to the cane, sometimes they can grow so tall that they blow over, or too much rain/water into the flowers cause them to fall over, if this happens, they are either in too shallow earth, or they need staked, the bulbs should be 4/6 inches under the ground for them to stay up in place, hope this helps you. WeeNel.
thanx wee.
