Need groundcover advice- San Jose area, CA (region 9)

I'm looking to plant groundcover in 3ft X 50 area (side of home)- some sun but close to neighbor so partial shade also. Currently this area is landscaping rock (will remove). Am looking at thyme (wooly or creeping)- desire low maintenance, small height, ability to walk on occasionally. Are these good possibilities? Would one be preferred over the other? Any other suggestions? Do I buy flats and separate/plant plugs? How far apart, and how quickly can I expect spreading?

Thanks in advance for any help with this (I know there are lots of questions!!)

Hi EBSteve, you are going in the right directions as far as plants that will do well in your stoney/rocky soil, I would add Lavenders, Catnip also called Nepeta, Aubrieta, Iberis, Rosemary, depending on size of area, plant some Yucca, Cactii, there are lots of plants for your soil, but maybe these will give you ideas to get you started, the way to plant with distance is to read the lables, see if they state the hight and spread of each individual plant and grow them with this gap in mind, however, if you like plants that slightly grow into each other, then about 4/6 inch less gap. it is always best if you want a good look and effect, you plant each type in odd numbers like 3 or five or 7 depending on the mass of each plant you like the look, smell and colour of. so good luck and happy gardening, WeeNel.
