identification of a flower or flowering tree...help

Sydney, Australia

i apologise for appearing so ignorant of the gardening world, but i have a rather pressing question about what this particular tree is called. i have no photos of it so i shall try my best to give you all a good description. it is a purlpe flowering tree with no particlar height limit on it on average i have seen the tallest one reach at least 10ft. when it blooms around spring/summer the entire tree is compltely covered in these purlpe flowery blossoms. im not sure what the beginning of its name is but i think ive heard the last word to sound like "chee-na" used in it.
They really are the sweetest tree and it would mean so much to me if i could only know the name as i plan to plant one where unfortunately my dog recently was buried and it would make an old mans day to plant something so beutiful over his best mates final resting place.

G'day Greenie4 life...golly it's pretty lonely over on the Ozzie forum..I don't blame you for wandering over here like I did....nice friendly people ...about your tree ...purple and and cheena guess that could be the lovely Tibouchina! Do the flowers look like velvet?
Sorry I haven't a picture...just google the name...and you will see
wether it is the right thing...good luck I hope you find what you are looking for :)

I would guess Tibouchina as well. Here's one of the most common ones
