Is there a proper way to prune grape vines & when is the best time ??
Grape Vines
Best way depends on if you're pruning it for fruit production or if you want it to grow up and cover an arbor, etc. Here's a reference that describes how to prune it for fruit production
http://mtvernon.wsu.edu/frt_hort/grape_pruning_basics.htm
If you're trying to get it to grow over an arbor and you're not as worried about fruit production, then you're better off not pruning it nearly as much, just trim out any tendrils/branches that you're not able to get to go on the arbor.
Pruning time is in the winter when the vines are dormant, but if you're training it to cover an arbor and you get some crazy branches going where you don't want them you could trim those out other times of year as well.
Hi joerz1, the way to care for your grapes will really depend whether they are indoor or outdoor viness, but also as Ecrane mentioned, what size do you have availiable for the vine to grow, if you need it to eventually fill a large area, you will only prune some side shoots till the other shoots reach the length you want, if like mine, I have to grow it indoors, then you have to be more selective what and where you prune, also, can you tell us if this is a first year new vine or have you taken over the care of an established vine, Grape vines can grow really fast in the growing season, so it will be better for you and the vine to get it right at the start, can you let us know some more info and one of us should be able to help you do it right and therefore more fruiting, WeeNell.
Joe, I can tell you what I do to my grape vine. I have had it for 6 years and do not know what kind it is. I get lots and lots of ripe grapes by beggining of October. I'am in zone 4.
I always prune my vine in spring around end of April. I cut it pretty good. I leave about 2 ft of the vines. Mine always gets huge by the end of the year.
Nobody told me how to take care of my grape vine, I just started pruning it every spring and have never had a problem. DM
