We're not in a flood zone, but we're on the bottom of a slight slope, relative to our neighbors. Today it rained VERY hard, and I looked out to see my flower beds covered in water. Gawd, what a terrible feeling! We're blessed with good drainage at least, so it went down within an hour after it stopped raining.
Will this harm my plants? I posted in the soil forum that I need to put 2 to 3 inches of soil in my beds for this very reason, but I'm worried about whether I'll have to dig my plants up and replant if I do this.
You know folks, gardening can be stressful! No one ever tells you that 'til you're knee-deep in it and couldn't stop if you wanted to.
Heavy rain floods my flower beds!
If the water drained away after only an hour, I'd say there's no harm done. You might want to try digging a channel to divert the surface water away from the flowerbed and into a drain or pond or bog garden. If you are raising the level of the flowerbed by as much as 3 inches, then I think you'd better raise the plants too! Dormant bulbs would probably be OK left where they are, though.
Thank you, June, although that wasn't what I wanted to hear, LOL! I think we are going to install a French drain at some point, but I still need to raise that soil level. Over the years it's become compacted.
