I don't know whether to deadhead individual flowers or the whole cluster of flowers. And do I cut them back to the next set of leaves, etc?
How do I deadhead Morris Berd Phlox?
Hi pgt, the truth is, to keep any plant that flowers to continue to make more flowers, you need to deadhead them all, except bulbs that only make one flowering each year. However, if these phlox are anuals, they will die and reseed themselves, if they are byannuals then they grow from seed one year and flower the next year, then die, if these ar perennials, then you still deadhead all but the later will come back each year, flower every year, so it is wise not to let them seed as this weekens the plant, if you want some seeds from the perennials, just let a few flowers go to seed as you will get plenty seeds from these few flowers, good luck, hope this helps you. WeeNel.
Yes, I know that I need to deadhead it. I just want to know how to do it for this particular plant. Do I dead head each individual flower as it fades to its lateral bud? Or do I wait until a whole cluster is fading, and then deadhead it to a lateral leaf? Or do I remove the entire stem when the cluster fades?
I wouldn't remove the whole stem, there are some plants that you can do that way but most you're better off just removing the flowers. I would take off the whole cluster when it fades, much easier that way than trying to remove individual flowers.
Ecranes right as you would be deadheading all day if you do indevidual flowers as they are really clusters of such small flowers, if you see little side shoots on the stems, just cut above these so they will give you more flowers, Good luck. WeeNel.
I never dead head mine and they are beautiful every year. I do not know anyone in this area that dead heads.
Thanks guys. I'll go ahead and deadhead the clusters. I appreciate your help.
