Awesome Pots!

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I got tired of paying $5.00 for a small pot and upwards of $10.00 for a decent sized one and the pretty ones are even higher. And it's all basically the same stuff.

I love garage sales, thrift shops, dollar stores, etc. So when I stopped by one day it hit me, Hey, they have pots! I paid usually less than a dollar each, which is great b/c I need a lot.

Mugs also make really cute pots and especially when you get them w/ a saucer.

Any "pots" w/ out drainage holes can be drilled w/ a tile bit. Pots with fabric and bows can be sprayed with lacquer so you can use it outside.

I have some pics of some of my collection here:

What a fine idea, I love your collection. The red one was very nice!

I was by a thrift store the other day and bought an old picnic basket fromt he 50's I put an old burlap sac in it and poof I had a planter, I put swiss chard and herbs in it. I love it, it goes well with my terracotta pots and it is interesting!

I saw someone put a burlap sack into an old kids wagon and plant flowers and it was lovely as well.

Any other ideas?

Oh! I buy small wicker baskets and put orchids in them. It's like mounting them but you can also put media in there.

i will pay full price for foam pots that you get from the dollar store...
they look almost like concrete ....but really insulate my plants....

gotta love the dollar store!

I've never seen the foam kind. All we have in the dollar stores here are trashy green ones that even I won't resort to and I spray paint black plastic nursery pots white! Talk about ugly but as long as it stops it from absorbing more heat.

I love the foam pots too. They drain and insulate well, and they are pretty.

Don't see them much at dollar stores around here, but places like Garden Ridge carry a good selection. They're not cheap--about the same price as clay. But they don't break and mine have lasted longer.

The foam ones have lasted me, I got them at Menards on close out one fall, the problem has been that the paint on them break down. At least mine have.

dove...what is menard? and yes i have a problem with paint staying on also....but i spray paint mine....i think it helps them with their life expectancy...

Menard's is like a Home Depot or Lowes. Yes we have a dollar general near here.

Great idea CaptMicha! I'll have to hit a few garage sales and thrift stores. I really love your turtle pot! I have been looking for some interesting pots, but no luck yet. Just the same run of the mill offerings.

sticks_n_stones - love how you've arranged your pots on the shelves and chairs. Definitely the different heights highlights the pots and makes for a more interesting display.
