Marigolds haven't bloomed

Champaign, IL(Zone 5b)

I planted some marigolds from seed a few months ago. Most of them have gotten much larger than regular marigolds I've seen(at least 12 inches tall, maybe 15). They don't really bush out, they're just very tall. So far, very few have bloomed...the ones that have are the ones that haven't gotten so tall. I have some in full sun(veggie garden) that are huge, and others in part sun. The ones that recieve the least amount of sun seem to be blooming more. Should I have pinched them so they didn't get so tall, and will they ever bloom?

It's still early, they'll bloom. The small variety I planted by seed just started blooming. I'm in a zone 6a, some of the same haven't bloomed yet. They will get bushier If they are pinched back. One year I planted Giant marigolds thinking it was referring to bloom size, and they were about 3 to 4 ft tall!

Thanks Crashbandiscoot. I believe they are french marigolds and crackerjack marigolds. I was afraid that if I started pinching now I might ruin their chances of blooming if the stalk was gearing up to bloom. If I do pinch them back, how far should I do it and where at?

In that case, I'd let them go, just deadheading any old spent blooms, or if you want you can take off any new emerging buds, for a couple of weeks, but I've grown both of those, and I'd just deadhead them. It's early you'll be amazed at the growth yet to come! They are a lot of fun! Enjoy! I wouldn't pinch off any of the plant tho....just buds.

Ok, thanks! I'll leave them alone then!
