I am new to the houston, TX area and started a new garden in my back yard. Wanting to plant perennials with lots of color and some cut flowers. Please help.
New to TX Gardening-HELP!
Welcome to Houston!!! Do you want hot colors (red, orange, bright yellows), or cooler colors (blue, purple, pinks, lighter yellows)? Or a mix? :-) Do you have a lot of sun, or a lot of shade, or something in between?
Either way, you'll learn to love salvias. They come in all sorts of colors and sizes and do very well in the Houston heat and humidity. This one is red, but there are several other colors: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/243/index.html
There are several roses that do very well down here. You do need to be careful which ones you choose, though, to make sure you find one that will deal well with our humidity. Here's a website with a list of roses that like us, and lots of other information about roses in Houston: http://www.burger.com/roseindx.htm
Here is a website that lists native Texas plants. It's always good to work with plants that actually belong here.. they tend to cooperate better. :-) http://www.npot.org/
I hope that helped a little... I'll be happy to give you some more suggestions if you have more questions, and I'm sure there will be others popping in with suggestions, too. :-)
