Help I have my first garden- my squash flowers are being cut off
by some thing at the stem and nothing is growing from it, I do not see any bugs?
Also I heard I can spray dawn soap mixed at 1 teaspoon @ quart instead of sevin dust. Do I spray the base or leaves or everything.
Thank You for any help

squash flowers or being cut off at the stem
First you need to figure out what it is, then you can figure out the right way to get rid of it. If it's rabbits, Dawn and Sevin aren't going to do too much! Even if it is a bug of some sort, it's generally more effective if you catch them in the act and spray them then, some pesticides may leave something residual behind that can get things later but most of them won't leave enough behind. And some pesticides are more effective on certain types of bugs than others, so it's still important to figure out what it is.
I don't grow veggies so I'm not too familiar with the pests that give you problems on them, one thought would be cutworms but I'm sure there are other possibilities too, and even if it is cutworms I'm not sure what the right treatment would be.
some/most squash varieties produce 'male' flowers first, before the 'female' or fruit bearing blooms start.
Could it be that the male flowers are simply dropping off, waiting for the female flowers?
Have your squash plants produced any fruits yet?
more questions than answers......
Yes some other plants have produced really nice squash, thats why I started looking at the other plants. Thats when I noticed the flowers fall off the stems. it is the same pretty yellow flower but it drops off the stem like something cutting it. No deer or other animals just cats.
I sprayed the plants with dawn soap 1 tea spoon to a quart of water and sprayed it, I also have sevin dusted them to night.
Thank You for all replys.
