Name the plant and teach me how to care for it!

Spring, TX

Hi,

I'm a new homebuyer, and therefore, a first time gardner. My home came with these little flowering plants in the front yard, but I can't figure out how best to care for them and get them to flower. I've never really gardened before, so I don't even know if I'm using the right words to describe it, but here goes: It's got a round base of long straight leaves that kind of come up, like a round fountain. From the base, there are long stems that come up about 2 feet and at the end of the stems is a round cluster of bluish/purplish small flowers. I pulled out a few of the dead stems and there's a bit of an onion-y smell to the stems. Here's a picture.

If you could tell me what it is and how I should care for it to keep it looking pretty, I'd appreciate it!

It looks like Society garlic....if you get down and sniff it and it smells like garlic .....it looks a lot like mine.If it is don't worry it grows like a weed!...just let it do it's thing. If not we will have to see what everyone else suggests...good luck!:-)

I am not sure exactly what this is called but I have the same plant in front of my new home also, I have been cutting the stalks out after the flowers are almost gone and it just keeps shooting up new ones! It loves water too.

If I'm correct about it being society garlic, it can also get by with not a lot of water.

Yes, I feel quite certain that it is Society Garlic - I have planted both this variety and also the variegated in my garden. In hot So Cal, it seems to thrive with either a little or a lot of water - super easy plant that always looks nice. Cutting spent blooms definitely encourages more :-)
