Show Us Your Water Gardens ....Big Or Small We Love Them All

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

daylily970 - Beautiful! Something like yours would be my dream. Ya got it goin' on there! I have to ask .... I noticed in your second photo there is a fountain. Is that a solar powered floating water lily fountain? If so, do you mind if I asked where you got it? Your plants around your pond and stream are so pretty! Outstanding set-up you have! Thanks for jumping in and posting your photos! Very nice!

Gorgeous! Love the iris!!

I set mine up to add a waterfall and eventually a stream. Any web sites as a pointer for me to install a stream?

thanks!

beckygardener ~ i got the solar fountain from Lowe's and i took it back today. it only works on sunny days, i didn't care for it. i'm going to put in a regular fountain.

rjhuddharrison ~ i read everything i could found about putting in a stream. i was lucky and two of Dave's members pixydish and txmel had posted pictures of there streams. i emailed them and they answered every question i had, they were a lot of help to me. this is the second year for the stream. here's the link to my diary and you can see how i did the stream. i will be adding more pictures in my diary of the stream and pond in the next few weeks. http://davesgarden.com/journal/ed/

Thanks Belinda, I will give it a study...
I've been plotting it for a while now... of course my ambitious project list doesn't match the "projects complete list" !!

Thanks, Belinda! I have one in my little water container garden, but I want another one and can't find any. I'll check Lowes!!! I know they only work on sunny days, which is fine for my small water gardens. And in Florida, we get a LOT of sun!!! :-)

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I have both a pond and a stream on my property. Only problem I have is with tadpoles....I have thousands! I remove as many as possible every other week and transfer to a large reservation pond, but next week, I have thousands more (you can see them in the photo). Oh well, at least it is interesting to watch them go from tadpole to frog/toad. Did I mention how careful you have to walk around....there are small frogs hopping around everywhere. Needless to say, they perform quite a serenade in the evening. And as you can see, my pond is concrete--I live in rockless Florida and don't want to buy them. My hubby created a foam mold and concreted over it.

Parrotma, Do you ever see the gel on top of the water with the eggs in it? If you could catch that and scoop them out it would control the amount you get. I always leave some in just so I can watch them. The toads come first...solid black tadpoles..and later the frogs.

Your pond is neat!!

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Very nice!

Wow, what a lot of labor!! I could loan you "snakey" my resident southern water snake...i used to have the same problem..now since he/she? has been in residence nary a frog, tadpole at all...though there are tons of swordtail fish and fry!! it's funny when i look at all the pictures of ponds, we all have to have a little whimsical decoration don't we?! (i have too many, but they make us smile!) sue

Marine City, MI(Zone 5a)

Im glad you mentioned whimsy by the pond. I have quite a bit too, but it makes me smile each time I sit there and relax. Here's what it looks like today. I just moved the ligularia from the front flower bed. I'm sure I will like it. :)/

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oh! I LOVE all the little froggie whimsical statues! Too, too cute!!! I guess I need to get on the ball and add some to my container water gardens! Great ideas, y'all! A separate thread for this would be great and more folks might see the thread title and add their photos too! :-)

Here's another pic. I love to sit out by the pond. We have the area set up like a campground, and the view you see out of the camper window is the pond surrounded by flowerbeds.

LOL at the bobber!
The ponds are all so great!

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I absolutely love all the whimsy. After all, it should be fun. Did you all notice that almost all the whimsy are frogs/toads. It is the same in my garden as well. Attached is a photo of my pond guard.

Parrotma... Ilove your froggies! And Bev, very lovely. They are continual works in progress, eh?

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

My work in progress has been going on for 12 years. I just had the pros come out to my pond and they did up an estimate of over $10,000.00 more. Instead we are using what I already have and he is gonna make it easier for me to operate and clean for a mere $1500-$2000. The $10,000.00 route and the pond would have backwashed itself. I sure wish I was rich and could go that route. LOL!!!

Jeri

Tampa, FL

lol! Don't we all?!!! With lots of $$$$'s the possibilities are endless...oh well, back to buying lottery tickets for future ponds!! good luck with your project! sue

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

Backwashed...wonder how that is done? Hmmmm...

Lana

Clayton, NC(Zone 8a)

Hmmm, one of the ponds. This one is made with 60% to 30% tree shade from one end to the other, with one side shaded 100% by tallish plants.

The function of the pond is to have different levels of sun and heat shade to shuffle tropical waterlilies about according to the severity of the Summer heat.

As tropical waterlilies are by and large fickle and unreliable, hit and miss, poorly described and poorly documented as to their cultivation quirks being able to shuffle plants into different levels of shade can identify what works

Varieties known to be heat tolerant get to grow in the full heat of the sun, the very vulnerable varieties go in the shade, everything else is shunted about in between.

It's called the bat pond as, well, bats skim it at dusk to drink.

Because this got bumped to the top, I just reread most of the posts and looked at the great ponds. Time to time we spoke of too much rain and flooding. How things change in short a short period. Now our hearts are heavy for those in California who have been burned out of their homes. And again let us pray for their safety and calm their hearts.

Central, LA(Zone 8b)

After experiencing Katrina here I can attest that these people are going thru more than wondering about their homes. They need our prayers!!! The ones that loose homes are wondering WHY me? The ones that didn't are wondering WHY NOT me? This experience will change the people forever!!! Some for the good some not!!!

My heart goes out to all those in danger's way. I simply can't imagine what it must be like to go through something like that, fires or Katrina. Our first reaction as onlookers is to rejoice when nobody was hurt, but that's short-lived. There are so many other things that can arise after a disaster like that, like post-traumatic stress disorder. That's really a crippling result. Seems to me that the grieving could be endless.
