Show Us Your Water Gardens ....Big Or Small We Love Them All

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

There are two threads going that are enlightening and heartbreaking and cause for joy all at once. They are: fires and Ca fires. I think they are both under the California forum should you be interested. The Ca fires is concern for the future and how DGers could help.

Thanks Theresa and bsavage. It took me a week to get that shot. I was using an old 35mm, but finally she was mine:) I am about to purchase a Digital Camera, so maybe I can really take some great pics.

I think of the Californians every day, wishing them God's speed on the long journey to recovery. If I had the power, I would send them every last drop of rain from Pennsylvania, but the man upstairs will provide and soon healing rains and recovery will be theirs. I pray something beautiful and better will spring forth from the ashes left on the ground.

Things are already starting to slow down with the pond as the temperatures are dropping. I already miss sitting out on the deck and watching the fish.

This pictures was taken during the middle of July.

I'm still lucky...still have deck weather for fish watching, but every year I look at those propane heaters and fantasize..

I just haven't mastered taking a pic of a moving object! Had to put some temporary bird netting up to keep the herons away. I only get them for a week or 2 per year, and the net eventually distracts them enough to go away for another year (although I hate to lose fish to indicate it's "that time" again!)

Holy Cow, Mary!!!

How many koi do you have?

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Hmmm.....good question, I don't really know....they are all bunched together for the picture though. I have 3 small rectangular ponds, with really good filtration on them, so thusfar have been really lucky for 3 years, having not had any major problems with disease or bad water quality.

Bad pic of a pretty fish...Orange butterfly with white fins, probably 18" long. I just love to watch him swim in and out of the water lily.

Pretty one.

I lost all my koi over the winter last year. My heater stopped working and I just had too many fish in there with all that gas buildup. I didn't start out with a lot of fish, but those goldfish have a way of multiflying over and over! I took my pond all the way down to the bottom this summer and got rid of all the goldfish. I kept a couple shubunkins. However, somewhere in plants or somewhere, there were a couple of goldfish hiding and they have already started to restock my pond. I think I got 5 small koi and it was amazing how much they've grown in the short time they've been in there.

We may have to move in the spring and it is just making me sick to think of leaving my pond....

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

Joycet.....No matter how many fish I have, I still get upset at the thought of losing one. I hand pick each one out. I know what you're talking about with the goldfish, this year I finally separated mine into a pond of their own (now that I know they will interbreed with the koi) I had eggs all over the place in the spring, but I also let them hatch, and most seemed to have been eaten by the larger fish. Luckily here, I don't have to worry about heaters or my water freezing.

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

This summer I "de-goldfished". At least we removed absolutely everything that we could see and identify. But.........there were around 200 small to medium dark fry, some definitely koi, others too small to identify left. Next spring should be a hoot. Goldfish - the gift that keeps on giving!

Isn't THAT the truth!

Wow! Here in Iowa, it's Brrrrrr!! - The weather has been at just freezing during the day, but dips at night. Just fell in yesterday trying to get the snow off the surface of the pond - YIKES!! Up to my knees --- hope I didn't kill any fish! - Dax

Around here we call that "the polar bear plunge" LOL They are actuall going to intentially do that on Jan. 1 at one of the local parks to raise money for charity. I would just as soon not do it myself. Have you unthawed yet?
