Onions

Brookston, IN

Maybe I should take the time to go by the greenhouse and ask folks there about my onion question ...but I just don't always have the time . So here it is folks . I have put out several types of onions . A row of bulbs , which is doing rather well and stellar type strength ..lol ! And I have plant type onions such as sweet candys , and sweet spanish onions . I hill them and they are doing very well . Now .....my question is , when my onion plants get tall and are beginning to bend over ....do I bend the plant over and break the plant ?
A working buddy told me that this would help keep the nutrients in the onion , and the onion would continue to grow ...is there truth to his word ?

Don't know, but I have never known anyone to do it. An onion has usually reached its full growth when the tops fall over and begin to dry up.

Yeah, I thought I saw a guide that said to harvest when 2/3s of the top was brown.

Dunno what happens if harvest earlier - maybe taste OK but size insufficient?

Like anything else picked immature, its use them or lose them. A mature onion even the sweet ones have some keeping ability.

What would be the advice for 'green' (bunch?) onions?

I'm trying - for the first time - to grow some veggies and planted some of the purple bunch onions like these;

Those are usually used as green onions. Pull them anytime they big enough to use. Just use them as you pull them. Treat them as you would any other perishable vegetable.

Thanks for the heads up on these onions ....I'll leave the plant alone and let it die on its own !
