Name my (Ginger?) plant

Gainesville, FL

I got this plant from a defunct trailer park and planted it seven years ago. It bloomed for the first time recently. It looks like a ginger plant and is 7 or 8 feet tall with 2 or 3 feet long dark green leaves about 4 inches wide.
Thanks

It looks like you may have Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet). You didn't mention the foliage being varigated, but there is a variety grown for the foliage.

You have a nice picture, and need to add it to the plant files.

H tsewyek, that is a stunner, does it snell as good as ot looks, I cant grow Ginger plants of any kind here in Scotland UK, even though I have a greenhouse, I am unsure about ordering by post due to import standard etc, but when I visit USA, I am always blown over when I see these in gardens and hotels etc, you are so lucky, enjoy.
The only thing I ever rescue is friends or family plants that are falling by the wayside, even then, they usually want them back once they are well again, Ill have to insist on a better type of plant from now on eh, Ha, Ha, Ha. Good luck. Weenel.

It is the beautifull shell ginger.....I have the normal one and the verigated as well.....they both have the same wonderful flowers.
sorry no smell ....the flowers are very long lasting in a vase and the leaves of the varigated type are just stunning as a large floral arrangement....and lasts for weeks. In my area we have hot summers and winters with some light frosts ...but in my back garden I have a 6ft fence surrounding a "tropical garden"....the only one in the district.....if you have a warm spot with a bit of high shelter like trees and palms....you can grow this! I also have the yellow and the white ginger and they are very very fragrant in fact the white ginger is just about the most wonderful perfume ever!

Thank you all for your help and information.

It is Shell Ginger I believe and we have the Varigated one and the more plain one.
Also several years ago, my boyfriend got the ginger from a field (now a CVS Drugstore) across the street from our home. He did not know what it was until a few weeks ago. He had it on the South side of the house and it grew very fast. He tore it all down because it grew all over the side of the house and covered the electrical meter. You should had seen the look on his face when we told him it was Ginger!

Is this Ginger plant related to the edible ginger that you can cook with?

It's in the same family, but a different genus.
