Red Bird Plant

Morganton, NC

Red Bird Plant is the only name I have heard it called. None of the garden shops in Monrgaton, NC that I have asked and shown the leaves seem to know what it is. From looking on this web site I think it might be Variegated Devil's Backbone. Everyone that comes to my house has to touch it to be sure that it is real. I got cuttings from a friend in Texas five years ago. Her plant blooms every year with red blooms that are shaped like little birds. I can not get my plant to bloom. Would someone please HELP!

That plant is also known as redbird cactus, so that probably is what you have. Can you give us some more info about the conditions you're growing it in (light, water, fertilizer, etc)? I don't know too much specifically about this plant, but my guess would be that one of those things is not quite ideal.

Here's the entry for it in Plant Files, if you read the comments that people have put in it may give you some insights into what conditions might be best for it

I have a Devil's Backbone Plant that I got in trade from another DG'er late last year. Mine is in my screened pool enclosure in sun and seems to be happy. It's not blooming right now, but should begin blooming before long. The Plant Files says Partial to Full Shade. Mine gets sun, but it is filtered by the screen. Later in the summer when the sun is more intense, I will move it to a shadier location .... very bright light, but no direct sun.
