Hello all!
I have Common Mallow spreading like crazy!!!!!!! I have spread it with Round Up and tried to keep it mowed down short, but it does not seem to help!
The spot that I spread 3 times finally died off and has not come back, but I really need to plant grass and I can't kill it off!
I also have Whitestem Filaree that keeps coming back to life! I don't know which one of the two is worse! LOL
Do I have to dig all of this up? In the back yard it would not he so bad, but in the front it would give me a lot of bald spots!
I guess it does not matter the look brown anyway, but put off purple flowers after I mow it down again!
The Bind Weed I thought I had killed off last year but it is trying to make a come back in a few new spots. Round Up worked miracles on it!! I coated it well using the foam setting on the Round Up sprayer and it killed it in just a few hours!
Any one have any ideas on what to do about the Common Mallow and Whitestem Filaree?
I will try and get some pics to add tomorrow, so you all can tell me for sure I am calling it the right thing and get a clearer picture of the situation!
Thanks all for your help!
How to killCommon Mallow?
Hi txflower, you will have to make sure the mallow and others dont get to the flower stage as they set seeds like mad, they also have really tough roots and can get them going on a postage stamp, people say the best way to do it is to hit all the stems and leaves with a stick, this breaks/cuts them and the weedkiller gets into the root system easier and faster, it could take you a couple of seasons to get rid, as there will be seeds laying dormant just waiting the chance to get growing again, you must be very carefull when spraying weed killers as if you have a slight breeze, it will blow onto other plants around where you work. you also have to be patient as weed killers are not instant fixes, they take time to get to the root system and then back up into the foliage before you see any sign of dying off.
I guess the last resort, if all else fails is to cover the area with a thick black plastic sheeting so that the plants are starved of light and water, if that aint a poss, then good old digging out for months on end and at the same time cut off the flowering heads so they dont continually set more seed, no quick easy way that I know of, so good luck. WeeNel.
HUMMM I had not thought of a black tarp/covering before! At this point I don't care it the grass goes if I can get it killed out! LOL I was trying to kill it so I could put down grass seed anyway! The Mallow that is!
The Filaree is in the front yard so it is more of a problem! LOL
I got a weed killer that will not kill the grass this time, or so it says! SO I guess I am in for a long haul on this this summer! LOL
I also have seedlings/sprouts of grass and weeds trying hard to come back in my flower bed!!! But I am just pulling them as I see them! I don't know what else to do! I know that weed killer will kill the flowers to so.... AWWW got to love the resilience of a weed! LOL
At least it I keep them cut short it looks green! LOL

I sm so sorry!! I hear ya! I can't kill it either! I thought Bine Weed was bad! LOL I am looking for a way to kill it off! I can tell ya that not watering it does not help! LOL
I have had it start to die off when I spray it every few days (1 to 2 times a week) it does seem to die off. BUT it does come back in the same spot in a few weeks!
If I find something I will let you know! I am going to look at my local extentions website tonight and see if I can find something.
I know where my grass is think it does not seem to come up.
AWWW if grass, flowers, and trees where as hardy as weeds! LOL
Here is what I found:
The National Gardening Association said you could kill it if you sprayed the right stuff!! WOO WOO I hope I can find this some where!

Ok I found this website. I live in TX and this is from CA but it tells you about the weed.
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/WEEDS/little_mallow.html After bringing up the page CLICK on "Malllows Pest Note" for the scoop/facts about it.
Unfortuntly it does say that spraying will not kill it. But I can tell you that when I sprayed it as I talked about earlier it did die off then came back, so maybe it you could pull it all up after it dies and then just keep a VERY close eye on it and spray any new sprouts you might get it! LOL But there is still seed there so you have to keep it up for every I guess as it says that the seeds can stay in the ground for years and not sprout!
This site also gives other ideas to help kill it off though!!
SO I guess it is just a matter of trying things and fighting until the death so to speak! LOL
Hope that helps! Maybe someone else will have a better idea! I am going to call the extention office Monday, I have a few other things to ask to.
Ok I finally got the time to post the info I got from the Texas A&M Extension office!
Here you go:
Herbicides that are labeled for control of mallow in turf are as follows;
Dismiss Turf Herbicide (FMC)
Quicksilver (FMC)
Shutout (Helena)
Hope that helps!
