What does the spacing in PF mean?

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

Okay, I'll show my ignorance now. I think I read the answer somewhere before, but I must have forgotten and lost the thread.

"Spacing" in Plant Files refers to what? The length that needs to be between two like plants? The diameter that needs to be allowed for one plant? The distance to allow between this plant and another of a different type?

The last two years I have taken it to mean the diameter that needs to be allowed for one plant, but I gotta tell you, my beds look pretty sparse. Maybe another year for it to fill in?

It may be obvious to everyone else, but the meaning is not intuitive to me like "Height" is. Thank you for your help.

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

It refers to the spacing between plants.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Specifically spacing between plants of the same cultivar. Beans (spacing between bean plants in a row) corn (spacing between corn plants in a row)

Powder Springs, GA(Zone 7b)

Spacing is the recommended distance to separate a growing plant from other plants. If you plant too close then in a few years the plants may become too crowded and will suffer. Some perennials should be divided every 3 to 5 years anyway.

You can always fill between new plants (perennials/shrubs) with annuals until the plants close the space between them. A gallon sized azalea can become quite large in 5 years for example. A gallon sized Japanese maple can have a spread of 8 foot across in 7 years as an example so you should allow at least 4 foot (half the diameter) to its closest neighbor.
