general bulb question

Vienna, VA

I planted several bulbs in my garden...how long will it be for me to start noticing grown? First time planting from a bulb.

Also ... any other tidbits or suggestions about growing bulbs ... I can use all the help I can get :)

What bulbs were they? How to plant/care for them is going to be different depending on what they are.

Vienna, VA

I planted Lilies, Bletillas, Astilbe, Galtonia and Convarellia (sp?).

I followed the directions very carefully, planting them at the correct depth and preparing the area before planting.

But I am wondering how long before it roots, how long before I see something growing, how often should I water and how often should I fertilize.

From what I was reading I should ferilize in the fall...but other then that...I am sort of clueless. I also read about two school of thought re: watering. Some said that in the spring moist to touch is best some say dry is best. I am trying to read everything I can get my hands on...but I don't have much re: caring for bulbs.

Hi Natlaw01, Ecrane is right, the growth of any plant or bulb all depends on type, some flower in spring, some in summer, some autumn, it should tell you on the package when they should flower, how tall how deep etc, as Guid only, condition and temp are also factors, but as you are really keen to learn, why not take a trip to you local librery and look for book for beginners, dont get ones that have volumes of info in deep detail, just ones that will explain bulbs, annuals, perenniels and shrubs, this will give you a better insight on what you are trying to achieve, your plants and bulbs need time to make roots and start to grow upwards so be patient, keep a watchfull eye on them and Yes, you will need to give them water to survive, especialy with summer heat, so good luck and happy gardening.
