Iris seeds

Albany, Australia

I have been given some iris seeds ( of three different types ), and was wondering if any-one knew how to go about getting them to germinate,.

I dont know which type of Iris the seeds came from as there are literaly hundreds of different ones, some are bulbs and some are like tubers (RHIZOM'S????) mine are the latter, so they seed all over the place and I sometimes yank the tiny things out thinking they are weed GRASS, so be careful where you do this, either put your seeds in SHALLOW PANS of sandy mixed compost, (sandy because they like soil that drains really well) dont plant seeds too deeply but just a light covering, if you can give bottom heat thats good but if not, a light but shaded place will do, how long they will take to germinate depends on the type of Iris they are, but I would guess within 4/5 months. remember to stick a label in too as they really do look like grass when they come through, I would sugest it will be a few years before the reach flowering size, but again, it all depends on type. next time you visit your friends garden see if you can cut a bit of the plant off just under the soil surface, that has roots attatched as they do need splitting ur every 3/4 years or the get all the new growth growing away from the centre, good luck and have fun. Thanks WeeNel, I shall give the shallow pan method as we are coming into winter,,hopefully by summer time I will have little plants to put into my garden.
Take care and have a good one
