I have a hill in southern California and in the back yard I haves tall eucalyptus and did have Oleander below. I got rid of the oleander but now I need to replace it with something thats not toxic to my kids or dog. There are plenty of flowering plants out there but I'd like to keep them to a minimum because I'm allergic to bees. Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Phil
On a hill, Eucalyptus above, Oleander below, what can I do?
You Dont say if you are in sun, shade, dry or damp, I can only imagine if you had Oleander then you get some sun for that, your Eucalyptus is wonderfull, especially the new tender tips on the branches and the smell of the crushed leaves is a real treat.
What to grow that no bees will be atracted to is not so easy, so could you grow Hostas if you could add plenty compost and water to keep them happy that way. they do flower, BUT, most people here in UK grow them for there wonderful leaf colours and paterns and cut the insignificant flowere off, so that all the energy goes into the leaves, Try Saxifrige that are only grown for the rosets of leaves, some Euphorbia have very little flowers, also Cactii, real hard to come up with non flowering plants but there are also evergreen like Thuja, Juniper, you could also climb some Clemetis UP into your Eucalyptus for colour, the flower season is quite short but with the grey of the leaves on the tree's it could look really lovely. hope this helps, do you have a gov department who could help with non flowering for your area. good luck.
